This race is watched religously here in Australia. :D

I am working nightshifts on Sunday, but I will still stay up ALL day watching the race from start to finish.:eek:

Most who don't even follow motor racing will still watch this race. Very very popular here.

That's great man. Have you watched them race before at one of their normal rounds? :)

They are pretty cool to watch. Even better in person as those V8s REALLY roar down the tack.

They are hugely popular and the drivers have many fans. As do the cars, Holden or Ford. There used to be many characters over the years, more so 20+ yrs ago. I remember watching this race as a kid, probably from 5 yrs old I reckon.

If it's your first time, I am sure you will really enjoy it. :)

I have watched the series as much as possible over the last five or six years I guess but only when SPEED TV decides to air them so I have been at their mercy lol. I will have to set multiple alarms incase I fall asleep after all the adult beverages and barbq especially for the last 1-2hr's.

+888!! Hope he makes this years race victory number six. :D

I have ALWAYS loved Lowndes. I think he is a great guy and have met him here on several occasions because of his Autobarn commitments.
*My friend owns Autobarn, so we spent a lot of time with Lowndes when he was here*

A friend of mine that works underground with us used to build his race engines in the Gibson Motorsport days. They are still friends to this day.

A (camera phone) pic of Lowndes and I from 2002 and a pic of Lowndes signing a cap for Nicole at Hidden Valley in 2008.

I hope this race becomes an event that SPEED shows for many years to come. I forgot to ask earlier but isn't this series coming to the US next year?

Thanks PAP and you do the same, an epic weekend of racing ahead of us no doubt.

    Best,
    Gregg

Pardon the dumb question, but is the race 1000 miles or 1000 kilometers (approx 600 miles)? The live Speed Channel coverage runs for six hours, which suggests to me kilos but just want to make sure.

Not a dumb question at all. :)

The race is a 1000km. Here is a tad more info and a vid of the first lap of last year which includes a HUGE single car crash. :)

I'm the same Pap .. I grew up watching the "Big Race" .. and living in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney I use to sit by the road to watch for the transporters go by carrying the cars to Bathurst, and being about halfway many would stop at the local pub so I managed to meet many of drivers as well.

Since moving overseas 20 years ago I haven't been able to catch alot of the V8's, although they now show most of the races and the 1000 is live on Sunday. A huge day of sport .. Bathurst, F1 and Rugby World Cup quarter finals. The remote is going to get a work out!

Here's a pic of me last year with Garth Tander & my chauffer for the day .. the fastest man around the mountain (at that time) Greg Murphy .. whilst they were visiting Singapore.

    Fantastic!! :)

I am going to miss the F1 tonight because of work and will not catch any Rugby either.

I just got home from work now and watching the start of the days racing. Porsche Carerra Cup on next.

I will stay awake as long as I can, but I predict I will crash out around 11am ish. :p

Great pics, thanks for sharing mate. :)

Was a FANTASTIC finish!! If Lowndes had one more lap, he would have taken the win away from Tander.

Every year this race never disappoints and this year was no different. The finish was the closest ever.

I have watched this race for over 20 years now and it never ceases to amaze me at how brutal it can be on both driver and car.

that's why its the "great race" .. seat of the pants stuff for over 6 hours .. brilliant!

but seriously that no.17 car is jinxed at the mountain .. if I was Dick Johnson I'd retire the number for good

I watched about half an hour,... and kept thinking it would be really cool to see MotoGP/SBK racing there. Does the course get used for anything else?

    Taken from Wiki.

Today, Bathurst is synonymous with motorsport, being the site of the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit. It hosts the Bathurst 12 Hour motor race each February, the Bathurst Motor Festival every Easter, and the Bathurst 1000 motor race each October. During these times, the population swells with tourists.

The circuit is a public road when not being used for racing and is a popular tourist attraction for visitors to the city.

Bathurst has a long history of racing, beginning with motorcycle racing from 1911.[46] From 1931 to 1938, motorcycle racing was conducted at the Old Vale Circuit[47] before moving to the newly created Mount Panorama Circuit in 1938. On 16 April 1938, Mount Panorama attracted 20,000 spectators to its first race, The Australian Tourist Trophy and in 2006 the crowd figure reached 194,000 for the 3 day Bathurst 1000 event.[48]

A group known as 'Mount Panorama Second Circuit Action Group' is promoting and lobbying to incorporate additional track and facilities into the existing circuit to capture additional events and increase the use of the facility.[49]

Beside the circuit is the National Motor Racing Museum. This museum was built to encourage visitors to the circuit all year round and includes motor cycles and cars, representing the racing history of Bathurst. Peter Brock, the race car driver, was synonymous with Mount Panorama racing and a memorial sculpture dedicated to him, is located in the museum grounds.
