I think our 550 use servotronic as I have seen the servotronic ECU in the car and the hydralic transducer sticking off the steering rack which is ZF #7823.998.103 .

    1. Electronic speedometer in the vehicle
    2. Electronic control unit (ECU)
    3. Electro-hydraulic transducer
    4. Rack and pinion power steering gear
    5. Steering pump
    6. Oil reservoir with fine filter
    7. Anti-vibration expansible hose
    8. Manually adjustable steering column

The FHP ECU is about 1000USD. I'm sure we can figure out the servotronic output for pennies and home brew our own better than FHP ECU's. What do you guys think?

FBB, don't know if this affects your analysis, but I purchased a FHP steering ECU (part #175891) for my 456M two weeks ago from Maranello, their price was GBP313, which is significantly less than USD1000 (but which is also far higher than your pennies target).

Interesting. Where is this ECU located?

Does it just work a pressure valve?

Could someone explain how it works?

    Thank you

the 550/575/456 all use the same part ?

If you run without, it will go to the 'high speed' setting, which basically means heavy steering at parking and city speeds. The only thing the unit does is regulate the steering oil pressures relative to the speed of the car and the steering angle. The PDF as posted explains it better than I ever could or am willing to pen down ;)

I do not believe they are the same between the models. Personally I really like the steering on my (old model) 456 and would not change anything about it. But then again I have never driven a car with FHP.
