I'm curious as to opinions here why there are now a pretty fair number of used 458's on the market. As an example, Miller, in CT, has 4 listed (1 sold). To be able to purchase one new or get on the wait list, I read you have to be a previous Ferrari owner. Obviously you have to have the wherewithal too. Why then, after achieving this opportunity to purchase a great car, would an owner give them up so quickly? Thoughts?.....

They might be getting the new 458 Spider and selling the coupe.

Bad economy and the new 458 spider coming out doesn't help. The car has also been out for almost 1 1/2 years now. No matter how great a car is people will always sell them. Also, production numbers for 458 have been healthy.

Very true. Will the Spyder "steal" too much demand from the Berlinetta?

if dealers have more demand for their allotment than supply it makes sense they can get picky with who gets a car. if I was in that position the first on my list would be those that buy each model that comes out, put limited miles on it, keep for right amount of time before flip prices no longer have premium, and let the dealer take financial benefits of flip. if you let a dealer double dip on profit for each allotment they end up better off.

I think we're at that time with the Spider coming out and new allotments available today that the dealers and flippers need to get'er done sooner than later. There will be a bunch of 1 owner cars on the market available.

The real question is when will these cars start falling below MSRP? Obviously enough of a market demand for them to keep them up there pricing wise.

The 458 has had more first time Ferrari owners than any other model. Economy and previous owners finally realizing it makes no sense to continually trade for marginally better cars.

The "have to own a Ferrari" era is gone. This doesn't mean dealers still won't hand select some.

I am waiting a few more years to score a deal on a low mileage used Ferrari 458! Prices are starting to drop from way over MSRP sticker to under sticker finally as more come on the market. A year ago they were selling for over 300k now under 280k. I like the Ferrari 458 better than the Lamborghini Gallardo. For now, I will buy a house and keep my BMW M3 as daily driver another 5-10 years then can have the Ferrari and perhaps a Bentley or Aston Martin for my new daily driver. That would be one sweet garage!

    The real reason is simple.

A). There are more if them out there.

B). Some 2010 are running on their last year of warranty and want to sell them now before the warranty is almost gone.

C). Summer is over and it's a rush to sell before Winter as most will wait for the spring.

Compared with 360's or F430's on the market, the 458 numbers are still small.

When will orders for the 458 Spider start? I was asked a while ago for the FF and I turned that down but the Spider is interesting.

I've asked and there is no answer. My belief is Nov or Dec. I'm sure some VIPs already have them lined up for spring delivery.

My feeling is they are going to limit the total allocation of spiders and not just treat every order as a "458". But I could be wrong. It's just a guess seeing how they are placing new coupe orders out to almost a year already, depending on the location.

+1. You are so right. I have contacted several dealers about wait listing for the 458 spyder, including two dealers I previously purchased cars from. They told me they already have 20+ people on their "pre" waiting list. I was further told that to qualify for the pre list you need to be a regular customer for both new car purchases and dealer service. Such is the sad truth of being on the wrong side of the supply and demand curve.

I've been diligently following the online used car market for about a month. It seems to me that cars with good/attractive color combos and specs sell pretty quickly, but those are in the minority. There are buyers, but the bidding indicates that many of those people are looking for a "bargain", so the reserve isn't met and the car gets re-listed.

Perhaps it's not so much that there aren't buyers, but more that the price for the supply is too high for the color combos and specs being offered in the market. In other words, some combos and specs are retaining their value better than the vanilla and cliche (straight red/beige) cars.

    Thoughts?

Asking prices are high for the relative demand. With 2012 models out, 2010's are sure to drop to sticker and below soon. Conversely, spider production will actually stabilize 458 coupe prices, as the bulk of production/demand switches to spiders starting next quarter. In the U.S. expect to see relatively few coupe allocations/sales starting then. Once the first few 458 spiders hit the secondary market near the $400K range, all of a sudden 2010 458 coupes at $250K will seem like good value. It will then take a good 12 additional months for significant depreciation on the spider to start, so overall I expect relatively modest depreciation on coupes over the next several years.

I am looking at either the 458 or 599 as my first Ferrari. Since I already have a daily driver, I can wait for a low mileage used F-car at good price in next few years. Either that or Lamborghini Gallardo LP560!

The warranty is for 3 yrs so the 2010's have until 2013 and are not on their "last yr of warranty"

This is 2012 model year already. If you bought an early 2010, it runs out in a year (fall/winter 2012)

But, the bigger factor is the weather. People want to beat the winter months where these things are hard to move in half the US until spring -- and after April 15th when taxes are due in the rest of it. There's always a fall rush as soon as summer is over. This is also not unique to Ferrari as there's always a used car sales rush when the new models come in.

If you can't sell your 458 now, it's possible that after April 15th of next year you may have as little as 6 to 8 months left on the warranty to sell it.
