German news reports tonight S. Vettle told Ferrari to "Pound Sand," politiely, after Ferrai tried to "buy him" onto the team from Red Bull.

Simple. Why would he leave the best team in F1?


Looks like Ferrari is going to have to BUILD a team. They are not going to buy one this time. Vettle is obviously a young man with principle and loyality.

Guess we will see just how good Ferrari really is.

Reality, Ferrari is desperate, have the money to buy anything but they are finding that their money is NOT valuable. Eliminate Domenicali and de Montezemelo, it might get back to form.

Its as if Domenicali has photos of LdM is some comprimising situation.

 

Buying Vettel doesn't help Ferrari: they already have the best driver of the field

They should try to buy Newey. At ANY cost.

Good on em, you might think Vettel is overrated but you have to respect his loyalty. They can't buy their way out of the mess they've created.

 

Perfectly correct, except that shouldn't "try"; they need to get him or find someone as good (unidentified at this point as far as I know).

 

Newey has made it clear he is not going anywhere. The only way Ferrari is getting him is if they find some serious dirt on him lol. Serious blackmail is necessary for this guy. Ferrari will prove they don't need him anyway. F1 sort of operates in cycles anyway.

 

With the current rules, it's best to invest on designers, rather than drivers.

 

They have some decent design talent at Renault. I was hoping they'd replace Phil with RK at one point and thought he might be a conduit towards bringing a selection of their shining stars with him.

Buying Vettel seems an expensive way of masking the issue.

 

Yep...can't imagine anything changing in the double WDC/WCC team anytime soon. It will (of course) change at some point, but not for the foreseeable future. Amazing that such sums of money are "no object" to the drivers at this level of racing.

It does make me wonder though...has Ferrari gone after Hamilton? Or is that too untenable for them?

Sooner or later, Red Bull will fall as Constantinople did, and let´s see how loyal Vettel is then.

I suppose that Ferrari was just tempting him, but I really doubt that they are really interested in hiring any top driver. Right now, they even are not in a hurry to replace Massa, go figure.

Source? They may have put out a feeler or two but I've never heard about them making a serious offer.

Devils advocate; Why?

If you're in one of the few top seats you're probably not going to be in a rush to move. OTOH, they're all "independent contractors", often with short term, performance laden contracts - If a better deal comes up elsewhere, why not move on?

The days of "loyalty" in pro sports are, unfortunately, long gone.

Ian, while they are long gone, call me a sports romanticist, cherishing the days where one person stood with one company. It is least likely to happen, but just wishful thinking.

 

Fair enough!..... And I agree with you BTW; Seems that any player (in any sport) who stays his/her entire career with one team is now considered some kind of hero. "Back in the day" it was the norm.

Let's not forget that Juan Manuel Fangio drove for five manufacturers & won championships for several.

This isn't a driver problem, this is a car (and strategy) problem. They need some new chassis/aero engineers.

Why unfortunately? IMHO it would be boring if every driver and every engineer stayed with one team. A lot more interesting if they change the seats and work together or against each other in different combinations.

 

I don't think we can simply call it loyalty. Vettel is staying at RB because they have had the best car in the field two years running. I would be willing to bet any amount that if he were at Virgin or Lotus today he would sign a deal with Ferrari in two seconds. I am not saying that any driver wouldn't do the same and not that I would blame them. I am just not willing to call Vettel the loyal saint some say he is. He is a race car driver and an excellent one. He is going to stay with a team that can give him a winning car pure and simple. That just happens to be RB right now.
