Oh ok...I get it. He's saying a 348 handles really well....................unless you want to go fast.

    lol

I'd be giving a 308 the same number of 'stars' as a 355, but that's just me. I find them totally involving and communicative. Of course, the one they tested here had no standard wheels and tyres, which is unfortunate.

No mate, you've got it wrong (again). It says it handles really well unless you can't drive. Subtle difference. Still if that's the case you could always just put stuff like power steering and electronic dampers on it.... No wait a mo, that's been done. :D

I'm only quoting what the article says!! I'm never wrong.

I learnt years ago to take everything written in a motoring magazine with a grain of salt. I know you want to feel good about your car, so you're happily accepting every good thing written about it, whilst rejecting everything bad. Human nature! Only one person has to like the car I choose.....ME. If you like your car, then you don't need to worry about what a magazine article thinks after a couple of hours of driving.

I remember years ago reading an article on a BB512 which I happened to own at the time, and wondering if the author has actually even driven the car, it was SOOOOOO wrong.

Journos make money out of writing something people will read......I never look at it as more than entertainment value.

Let's look at this article, for example. The author talked about the handling of the 308...the very thing he was knocking about it, is the very thing I like!

So this guy liked the feel of the 348 (at low speed :) ).....but someone else might think it sucks.

Over many years of Ferrari ownership I've learned that you just accept the good with the bad. It's part of what makes them interesting.

    You're right...you shouldn't have.

There's a reason 348s are cheaper than 328s. lol...we could go on for ever about this!......shall we? I have time.

I know mate, just mucking about. I guess you're right I'm doing the opposite to lots of others who listen to all the bad stuff about a 348 and ignor the good. Kind of ballances things out. Guess the thing that people keep coming back to (me mostly, I know) is that many of the people who think the 348's handling 'sucks' have never driven one. Its not that they disagree because they don't like it, it's that they disagree coz other people who don't know have told them. And so it goes on.

p.s. comments about the 355 are totally tongue in cheek. I was aufully close to buying one myself, just prefered the 348.

I know I shouldn't but if you're going to give an opinion, it's always best if you agree with your opinion (if you see what I mean.)

As for the price I know, lots of people listen to people spurting nonsense about the 348 (and the 328 is pretty awsome). Truth is I like the 308, 328, 348 and 355. Looked at them all as a potential first Ferrari. See them all as different, none as inferior. Just the way I see it.

About going on for ever, this debate probably would but it's 23:15 here in the UK. Good chat though. As I say ignor any comments about the 355 being girlie, just idle banter. Take care, mate and enjoy your day.

But isnt this the point of this thread PP?

Other than the bad wrap that the 348 got post LDM's comments what is the reason? As Nos correctly points out I have never seen an article choosing the 328 over the 348 when they have been directly compared....grains of salt or not?? And he is also right that in the numerous articles written subsequently dissing the 348 I bet in the majority of cases that the author has never driven one.

I tried to take Peter Robinson to task recently over his 50 year special in "Wheels" magazine in which he said the 348 was one of the 10 worst cars he ever drove (another bandwagon jumper following LDM's comments) when I found his original article from 1989 on the 348 he praised it significantly....more grains of salt to prove your point....of course they never printed my letter

Sorry, I'm not used to a thread having a point!

Like I said a few pages back, it's all perception. IF a 348 is actually a good car, and let's pretend it is, (I've never even SEEN one, or it wasn't worth remembering, never mind driven one or sat in one), then it's up to potential owners to work that out for themselves.

A 308GTSi (the first of the injected V8s) is a great looking car, just like the cars immediately before and after, but they're the least popular. There's nothing actually wrong with them...but there you have it.

    Point proved indeed!!

p.s. some of the above is tongue in cheek.

Yes there is -- it's called hype. I'm sure Justin Bieber tickets can sell for a lot more than symphony tickets, but does that make him better? And I love 328's, BTW.

    :)

That's what I'm talking about...call it hype...call it perception. End result is the same.

Why is a 308GT4 1/2 the price of a 308GTB? They're almost the same to drive and almost the same mechanically!!...but people incorrectly think the GT4 is crap (including me until I owned one)

I have no dog in the fight, but I don't think the perception of a 308GT4 or a 348 is going to change any time soon.

    I agree.

At the end of the day, it really makes little difference to me as I'll continue to enjoy my car no matter what. It's just frustrating sometimes because, with some people, it's like arguing with a little kid who doesn't want to eat his vegetables. He's never tried broccoli, so how does he know he doesn't like it? Some other kid said it is gross, though, so it becomes "fact".

Or marmite (kind of like vegimite to you guys) love it or hate it's only lots of the 'haters' have never tried vegimite in this case.

Either that or they've changed their minds. We have TOP Gear over here (the origional one, obviously) and one of the Presenters/Journos is called Jeremy Clarkson. When he first tested the 348 he wrote:
"If the car had been good, or even very good that would have been enough......The car was in fact a sensation!"
When Top Gear road tested it they played it out with the song 'Simply the Best' and the afore mentioned Mr Clarkson said at the end that he's prefer it to his previous dream car, the Lambo Diablo (although this was Santa..) Not so much a proper road test like the article he wrote but he seemed to like it. Later he said it handled like the wheels were made of wood! There's been a hell of a lot of 'band wagon' jumping over the years. The Top Gear vid is below.

p.s. thought you guys knew I was in England and were just not mentioning the rugby out of kindness.
p.p.s My car will have a red roof (its damaged so has to be sprayed) but keeping the black sills so should look like the one in the vid. Little retro but I like it.

Met up with ex-Top Gear Presenter Steve Berry yesterday. He was a presenter on the show from 1991 onwards so I asked him what he thought of the 348.

He drove them at the time and also drove his friends one as recently as 2 weeks ago and he thinks its a great car and under rated.

Hi Sy. Think under rated is right. Have you had a chance to read this month's EVO yet? Admittedly the author said the 348 was dicey on the limit but really liked the feel. His conclussion was interesting too. Drove a 308,348,355,360,430 and 458. His highlight was the feeling of the 348's steering, and he admitted that he was less than looking forward to looking forward to the 348. One drive was all it took to change his mind.

Mate, is it my imagination or have you changed your icon for a shot of your 308 rather than your 355? There's no need to be embarased, mate. The 355 is a good car. :D
