Okay which Ferrari was this again. Was this car originally built as a 125 and then upgraded to a 159 and thus the second Ferrari built. Ferrari only built 2 x 159's I believe anyway ... I think? Thanks Pete
The first Ferrari built was 01C. It was a 125 and it no longer exists. The second Ferrari built was 02C. It was a 125 and it no longer exists. This is the third Ferrari built. It began as a 159 and was modified by Ferrari into a 166. It won The Turin GP in 1947. It is the oldest surviving Ferrari. Over the years it has been referred to as 002C but it's chassis stampings have always been 002 and it's COA signed by Mr. Ferrari identify it as 002. She's coming along nicely and we'll begin testing her in a about a week. Best
Just to split a few hairs. 01C and 02C no longer exist in their original forms and with their original numbers. There are assertions that each was repurposed and re-numbered. Look forward to seeing 002 returned to life. Interested if it will feel different with all the corrections you have made. Jeff
Ferrari 01C and Ferrari 02C no longer exist period. There are some that believe that parts of their chassis were reused and re stamped by Ferrari to build different typo cars with different chassis numbers at a later point but there are some that don't believe that is true and Ferrari afaik has not Classiched any cars with the chassis number 01C or 02C and another chassis number.
The issue with 01C is, was it scrapped or was this frame rebuilt and renumbered 010I? The 01C chassis is believed to be one of the first two Colombo,GILCO 56klg chassis modified and delivered by GILCO with the larger tubes and crossbracing at the center of the central X bracing.The chassis of 010I does not have the center X crossbracing and may or may not be one of the two 44klg delivered several months later by GILCO at the request of E.F. It is generally accepted that 01C was rebuilt and renumbered to 010I though this has never been really proved. As for 02C, after Pescara on August 15, 1948 it is believed to have been retired by S.F. and stripped down. The chassis was "refurbished" and a new CO was issued as 020I and the rolling rolling chassis[no body] sold to Cornacchia on April 15, 1949. There has been considerable research done on both of these and in my opinion these seem to be the best conclusions available. just one man's opinion tongascrew
This is a neverending discussion... I research a lot on those cars, and I have my own opinion: I think 02C was rebuilt as 001S, while 01C became the Spyder of Cortese at Pescara 1948, and it has no 00X number as it wasn't sold (and doesn't have a C.O.), and 03C (Sommer Turin 1947) became 002(C). 003S should be the first chassis built new for a 166. 0X numbers were Ferrari internal s/n, like for 125F1. Maybe Cornacchia's chiassis (020I) was 01C... MPC

Jim, after you finish it, and have it sorted, can I request you post a detailed description on its driving characteristics and feel. An in-car video would also be fantastic, if possible. I am very intrigued as to how one of these earliest Ferraris feel and drive compared to others, and I am sure there is at least one other person out there that feels the same. George

I agree. I have found that Michael Muller may be the best authority on these early cars. I have collected well over 200 pages of opinion, pictures and info fro many sources on these two[or four] chassis. This is just "one man's opinion" tongascrew

i saw Jim´s hands after the lap round the Etna 2005 - looked painful, but he was smiling...... 002C looked a bit exhausted then and was stopped by the police for smoking in a non-smoking area (last pic). i know it´s a repost but these were some memorable days.
