Hi sent this link by a 412 owner , apparently Dealers kyboshed it as it had 4 doors. http://www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.cfm?SaleCode=LF11&CarID=r184&fc=0 don't like the front, looks a bit Aston Zagato (which came out much later in 1985) any guesses what it will sell for on 26th October? This the Ferrari 'Pinin'. A 4 doors study created by Pininfarina in the 80's. The car had no engine at the time it was presented. Couple of years ago Ing. Mauro Forghieri, which is now owners of Oral Engineering in Modena and is the guy who designed the flat 12 F1 engine and derivates, modified a 512 BB engine and installed it in the car making it driveable. If recall correctly they had to change position of starter, alternator and few other mod to the engine to fit in the chassis. Best Gianni
Same starter, stock location. They had to add a fuel tank and filler access though. The prototype never ran it only ran after it was bought out of a collection and made to run. I dont think the windows open which kind of sucks, I would want to drive the thing if I bought it.
if not more...it's a true one off with a flat 12 and substantial Forghieri involvement, so it could easily go much higher. i always loved that car.
When the Pinin was originally shown it was a sensation. With the design community it was viewed as significant. Apparently there was serious thought about turning it into a production car but was ultimately killed by Enzo; too bad. This was a hand built one-off prototype by the hands of Pininfarina that was shown at every significant show in the world. If it had of been a running car when built the value would be much higher; look at what the Bertone show cars sold at in the Swiss auction. As the original but turned into a runner at a later date (using the originally packaged powertrain) it is worth less. $200,000? Could be about right or could be massively low depending upon how many interested bidders there are. Jeff
If i remember correctly the same car was in the Jack Swaters colection (Belgium). The car was the title car for the 2008 RM action.. The car was sold for 178.000 euro plus auction cost. I would expect this unique car providing the credentials are correct to bring much more. Not only is it a one off, it is the only Ferrari 4 door study ever, excluding the 4 doors build by Pininfarina for customers (Prince of Brunei had several 456 modified by Pininfarina). Besides that it was build to celebrate 50 years PininFarina. But i guess we all know 4 seater Ferrari always struggle bring top figures Peter
belongs to Autospeak Modena . It was auctioned with Bonhamsin Dubai 2010 already , but did not reached the limit. The owner like to have more the 1 million Euro for it.
correct. the car was never meant to run. the windows are not functional. geral roush had a great article on the car and the new owner embarking on making it a real driveable ferrari. pcb
I have taken in Modena in 2010 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice writeup in hemmings- http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2011/10/07/a-ferrari-for-the-family-one-off-pinin-concept-to-highlight-rms-london-auction/
I believe this car was slated for a 365 drivetrain by the current owners? Many would do 200 in a heartbeat, but I don't think there is any way that will cut it. edit: I just read description. "opposed 12 cylinder". Cool . A Boxer motor with a 400i torque tube?
I've seen this unique car several times. Last year at Autospeak in Modena I took the pictures below. It's fully functional (the car was started and moved). What's maybe not so obvious from pictures is that it's a very low sedan, very Ferrari. A sleek beauty. It must have been quite a job to fit that engine. The bottom of the engine almost scrapes the road! Great car, and I think it will go for $1M+ - especially since that famous photo of Enzo sitting in the car - this has ultimate provenance.
Fantastic pictures, especially of the engine, which are the first I've ever seen on this car. Thanks for posting them!
One that shouldnt have gone past the drawing board, only an opinion of course! The tail light detail looks nice though whether that look would ever have made production not sure. Huge glass area with pillarless look also interesting but the front is really very mundane and ugly in my opinion. Delorean crossover springs to mind. Certainly wasnt going to make it on the good looks stakes. All this and i dont even know who penned it was it pininfarina? Alastair
Interesting car. The interior design is a bit odd. Reminds me of what the late 70's thought cars would look like today.
Those wheels are really nice, the sculpted chiselled more modern look/take from the 400s wheels are beautiful. I presume they never saw production. Hope they keep the drawings and detail of those for posterity.
why on earth would someone put in a 512 engine, when a 400/412 would be the logical choice for a front engine sedan?
Lower height and profile to fit under the bodywork? Just guessing because otherwise you would be exactly right about the logical choice of an engine to put in that body in the early 1980's.
Very likely so - also the quote from an earlier post gives away a clue: "Couple of years ago Ing. Mauro Forghieri, which is now owners of Oral Engineering in Modena and is the guy who designed the flat 12 F1 engine and derivates, modified a 512 BB engine and installed it in the car making it driveable."
