That looks great its the correct bottle for the Car as the Bottle is also found on QPTIII's Cheers Graeme
Hi, Bart thank you for sharing this information with us. I have a similar problem on my Khamsin in Tehran. We have temeperatures of around 40°C in summer and heavy traffic. I thought of replacing the radiator through a larger one but if the overflow bottle is good enough to solve the problem, then I should try this first. Is there any instruction for the installation so I can follow? Thank you and regards, Armaz
-Doug R: regarding carpets you will find as you mentioned at least two types. They must have changed suppliers along the way, that is what I assume any way. -Graeme thanks for the pic of 421, I had been in touch with the owner a while ago thanks to you but had no photo. I love that color and it shows the subtlety of the design. Several other cars found, will post when I have caught up. We are finalizing the last details of the Khamsin Quaranta entry forms and will start sending them out to the 110 known European and UK owners as well as to others elsewhere in the world who might consider coming with their cars. One brave pilota by the way wants to drive many thousand kilometers to come to K40, he posts here, I will let him raise his finger...if he wants to! best regards, Marc
Hi Amarz In your situation the overflow wont be enough. I highly recommend an Aluminium Radiator with 50mm core. My car struggled in 32C till I put the Aluminium Radiator in and now is runs bang on the Thermostat opening Temp Regards Graeme
Hi Graeme, Thanks for the information. I thought so too. I have actually considered exactly the same spec as you mentioned, in aluminum and 50mm core. Did you change the size as well. I was thinking to remove the spare tyre and extend the radiator further down in order to use that incoming air through the grid for cooling purposes. Best regards, Armaz
Hi Armaz: Well unless Graeme connects a propeller (and a BIIIIg fuel tank) to his driveshaft to journey from the south Pacific across the red sea, the Suez canal -assuming Egypt is quiet and it is open- no I was talking about you Have you settled on who will travel with you in the accompanying vehicle from Tehran to Dijon? I am willing to push verrrrrry hard to help you in this endeavour, perhaps get sponsorship help, definitely worth an article or three, it will make the lazy ones feel guilty about saying "Oh you know I have a whole 324 kilometers to do to come to your event I don't know..." Marc PS: to properly engrave the longest distance traveled trophy for the award dinner on June 16 2012...please let me know correct spelling of your full name by email;-)...unless Graeme is already working on fitting a propeller or Claudio in Buenos Aires is feeling the travel itch! MS
...like yours truly you probably thought it was Matteo Panini's AM120080 about 6kms away....well thanks to Philippe a Maseratista from Brussels who recently toured Modena, there is another K which like in a racing photo finish beats 080 by a whisker, about 3kms from Viale Ciro Menotti: AM120292 owned by the Stanguellini family famous for their tiny 50's, 60's racing cars! I drove past their museum and former Fiat dealership countless times when living in Modena in 2006 and during visits such as last May but never had the time to visit. I definitely will bext time! The car has a German added chassis plate so the question is whether it actually went to Germany or was intended for that market but for some -usually financial- reason did not go and was bought cheaply by the Stanguellinis....exactly as happened for 080 which had been more or less abandoned at the factory along with outstanding bills by a shady character. Chassis plate? Is that what I call a license plate? Thanks for the response about the carpet---seems that "Wilton Wool" was not everywhere, always, nothing but!
Hi Armaz. There isnt any room left to put a bigger radiator in. The key component is that I have both the fans running of the switch rather than one for cooling and one for aircon. I have both on for both. The Other key thing to keep in mind is that there are schrouds around the radiator and ther need to be a neat fit. this is especially true along the bottom. I have a piece of foam inside the spare wheel cover ( I had it made to fit a standard road wheel) that expands the bag to seal the bottom of the radiator. You could put bigger fans on it but make sure they are a neat close fit to the back of the radiator so they suck through it. The originals actually draw air from nearly all the radiator because of the schroud. and check to make sure seal on this is in good condition. The Aircon I changed mine for a toyota Corolla unit, it also ment some minor plumbing fitting changes as the collola is O ring type where as the the original in a flare type and ist that good with the new 134a gas. There is one other mod in that you could replace the original Aircon compressor for a latter rotary type. Sid had done that with his car. Main thing to remember is that the air pump pulls the water pump. If you really want to get carried away you could install an electric water pump. I have not seen that done on a Khamsin yet but only time will see it happen. they are becomming very common on modded cars and some new cars I believe. they are worth 8 HP on a V8 and are very reliable and suffisticated. no theromo stat and no engine driven water pump impellor. They also cotroll the fans and the cooling and are self diagnosing and will let you know if they fail befor the engine gets cooked. http://www.daviescraig.com.au/Electric_Water_Pumps-list.aspx Regards Graeme
Dear Graeme, Thank you for sharing this information with us. I will proceed accordingly. Best regards, Armaz
Hi Armaz, Hi Graeme, First the connection of my expansion bottle / tank, whatsoever: I have left the original cap on the original reservoir on top of the engine. Make sure you do not go above 0.5atm or 7LBS, preferably even lower opening pressure!(5 LBS) On the expansion bottle I have a top closure cap only, so no pressure build up in the bottle; atmospheric. I had a 3 core radiator block mounted in the original frame work, sealed all the air-stream leakage areas by rubber flaps, aluminum shielding and foam rubber (Like Maserati did this originally but many K's have lost this during repairs!) a pain for your back since you need to lift the radiator in and out a couple of times to get them all fit properly but it pays off! Like Graeme, I made both fans run at the same time. Even when using power in 37degrees centigrade the engine stayed below 9O and when the fans kick in the temp drops to 70, all on the dash temp-gage. I run my cars on the R134a liquid and after adjusting the fan in the housing, cleaning brushes , etc the aircon works satisfactory. Do not compare it with any modern stuff tough! There is another bit of information on this subject in the thread: "Ghibli belt question"#4 and down. The systems on the G and K are very similar. Good luck! Bart
Thanks Bart for the hints. Lets see what happens when I repalce the current radiator through an aluminum one. Best regards Armaz
Hi Arnaz, Graeme, I had a lenghty conversation with ZF classic division here in Germany and they do not recommend any synthetic gear oil, bcause of wear on the synchro rings due to modern additives. Instead they recommend to use an EP 80 W, which you easily get from Castrol and others. Happy driving, Rolf
Please pardon the hijack: On the ZF site, they are now supporting the S5-20 transmission http://www.zf.com/corporate/en/company/tradition/s5_20/s5_20.html Regards Ian
Hello Bart... I'm a little late on this, but am very impressed with your expansion tank installation... It just so happens that I have the exact same spare tank sitting around (somewhere!)... When I get a chance I will look at performing the same installation... I may have some questions for you when the time comes... Here is one for now: Is the expansion tank slightly higher or lower than the regular tank (or does it not really matter)...??? Thanks in advance!!!! All... I will be taking my Khamsin to Greenville/Spartanburg, SC on Thursday and Friday (I will be visiting Ivan on Thursday)... The EuroFest event is on Saturday... Will take some pictures and post them here when I get back!.. Mike
Hi Mike, As high as possible gives the best result. A bit of physics here : The higher it sits the more equal the pressure is between the 2 levels. Make sure not too high up that it touches the hood when closing it a bit to quick... Like I mounted it the ignition is very accessible. Should I need more space I undo the hose and 2 screws and lift it out. The front side I drilled a hole in the chassis member and threaded it with M6. At the rear I drilled a 6 mm hole and put a bolt in with a washer and a nut so it sticks out as a stud: easier to clip the strip over it and thighten it. Success, Bart Image Unavailable, Please Login
Bart... Many thanks!!! Your installation looks so seamless that it looks like it came from the factory that way!.... Those are the kind of useful modifications I like... I will keep you informed of my progress... Mike
Mike, Thank you for the compliment. Whenever a mod is made it should be in line / harmony with the original design. Like I made my foam rubber seal for the interior air inlet: my wife's yoga mat lacks some 25 cm of length now... Regards, Bart
Hello Bart... Now that's funny... Just today, as I was cleaning up the Khamsin for the weekend, I saw that my original foam was falling and could be seen through the vents on the dash... As I pushed it up and away, I was thinking I will need to replace it with something.. And then your post shows up... Excellent timing!!! Also to confirm: Pressure cap on the original tank should be between 5 and 7 lbs, and no pressure (atmospheric) on the expansion tank... Mike
Mike, Caps: yes sir! Foam: I used a Dremel tool with the cylindrical sandpaper bit to get the foam in shape. One can also use a hot wire tool to get the sides straight. Success, Bart
Hi all, I am looking for a fuel compartment lid to my Khamsin. Does anybody know where I could get one? Best regards, Armaz Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello All... As promised some pictures from my trip to EuroFest, held in Spartanburg, SC.. This was an excellent event held at the BMW factory, with about 400 Euro cars in attendance... A total of five Maserati cars were present ( newer spyder, Mistral spyder, Ghibli, 3500GT, and my Khamsin).. I drove to Dawsonville, GA (near Atlanta) on Thursday.... On Friday a group consisting of 2 E-types, a Ferrari Testarossa, an Espada, Mistral spyder, and the Khamsin traveled to Greenville, SC... In total, I put about 500 miles on the Khamsin... She performed excellently (especially in the cooler weather).. Here are a few pics of her (US1120) on the trip!.. Hi Bob... Funny you should mention that... At the EuroFest show the two cars were side by side as well... A lot of discussion was held about many of the Gandini design and Bertone body similarities... Mike
