Yes...the FMVSS for those years specified the minimum height, so carmakers who wanted to keep a sexy low hoodline could opt for the pop-ups. The continued evolution of the FMVSS has also now introduced Pedestrian Protection, which requires cars to have a certain amount of unsupported bodywork available to absorb energy in the event of a pedestrian impact...this has made cars taller in the front than they used to be.
If there were to be any styling upgrades to flush lights for the 355, I would suggest F50-style lights. The F50 shares a lot of DNA with the 355, including 5 valves per cylinder, front grill appearance, side engine vents. Could anyone photoshop the F50 headlights on a 355. I would be curious to see how this looks. I agree with the opinion of one of the earlier posters that the rectangular flush lights "date it.".
yeah, the 355 was in the same timeline as the F50 ...... but since the 355 does not look as 'melted' as the F50 ........ I was thinking of adding a hint of F40 influence ..... and also make sure they 'match' the existing light scheme on the front bumper. The F50 lights are almost identical to the 360, save for the outline shape. Good points though!
I have no problem with the "dated" look. Square's fine with me. Been a long time since somebody other than another Ferrari (later model) owner referred to a 348 as "dated".
I started working the F40 lights into the IMSA but.... got sidetracked trying to make velcro in side windows. The Princes/err, Boss wanted windows if we go on a FCA tour...... next she will want a heater...... wipers...... The F40 has a steeper rake to the nose than the 348.... its easier to start from scratch than cut those to pieces. Worry not Sy, you will be doing the 4th re-freshen of the LM engine before the Still Master gets around to pulling the covers off of that cheater car.
Word of warning on flush headlights: I made a set for my MR2, but found once completed that the tunnel effect of having the lights buried between inner and outer walls severely cut down on usable forward illumination. I had to add additional aux lights down at the grill to be able to see anything at night. Image Unavailable, Please Login
did you use ordinary Plexiglass Acrylic or optical grade Lexan? That might account for the loss of lumens. JD
Jeff, that is an excellent point you've made. When I did mine I used Makrolon OP.....no problems at all but I'm also using round(not rectangular) HID super HO lights which are excellent for racing up to 200+mph.
I used Lexan, but the problem was not so much the light getting through the "glass", more of the light beam having minimal lateral spread due to the fences on each side of the box blocking the lateral dispersion.
I still didn't get the idea that any of you engineers are working on this. I'd be a candidate for testing (goth?) if you do. I despise those pop ups. Vince
I have 55W HID's in my fogs, that lights up better than the halogen headlights did - then I put HID in the headlights too - I'm thinking that most people are interested in the looks more than function.
