    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After 29 years I finally have the chassis number to the Ferrari that changed to course of my life. It was the first one I saw - I didn't even know what kind of car it was. 1977 308 GTB steel.

That was all I knew since I was 13. I just received an email only moments ago from the man who was driving it that day back in the spring of 81. It's a long story but we were reacquainted again just a few short years ago and he began the search for the chassis number which he knew was somewhere in some file in some box in some closet...maybe

Well, he found it. It is 21277 Apr 1977 build date. Originall Fly Yellow/Black and when these photos were made by me in 1981 it was owned by a pediatrician here in Birmingham, Al named Nabors. It's the first set of pics in this thread :

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=322953

He bought it used from FAF in Atlanta in the late 70's. He has long sinced passed away and I think the car went somewhere north east of here after that.

Please help me find my lost parent It is a car that I want to locate and purchase

(This is a dup thread from the 308 section - I have it here too for the exposure)

Doc, it was last seen in August, 1989, at the Meadow Brook Historic Races in Waterford Hills, MI, on Canadian plates. Good luck; I hope you find it.

Carbon, so the VIN would be F106AB21277, true?

Can a CarFax be run with the VIN (even though it isn't for sale at the moment)?

Technically, no. The VIN was invented in the late '70s and implemented in 1980 (in a few rare cases, a few 1979 model year cars received a VIN). Everything preceding the Vehicle Identification Number was merely a chassis number or serial number. The F106AB is the chassis type (F106A representing the 308, with the B suffix denoting the car's Berlinetta configuration; F106AS is the chassis type for 308s equipped with a removable Targa).

No; CarFax requires a VIN, not a mere chassis or serial number.

There are ten provinces and three territories, any idea which one that would have been written on the plate? I'd hazard a safe guess and say that if it was seen in Michigan, the closest province would be Ontario where it could have been driven from...

in 1981 all cars / had a standardized 17 digit VIN. before that, it was different from one manufacturer to the next. because of this carfax will not work with a pre 1981 non standard number.

Too bad, but at least the info is out that it is up here, somewhere...

True, but old cars are still registered and will still go by their old numbering system.

I had no issues when it came time to register and licence my GT4 (which had been in Canada for over a decade after being imported by a previous owner from NC). The agent was expecting me to rattle off a 17-digit VIN, but I just told her "10576"... The computer still accepted it...

I don't know about other provinces, but if an old car is imported into BC and will be registered as a "collector car", it can keep whatever S/N it has and not have to have a BC-issued 17-digit VIN (which it would have to otherwise).

On that note, this car could still be registered somewhere here in Canada simply as 21277. True, it can't be looked up through Carfax, but you could deal directly with provincial licencing/registering bureaus for that info.

Dr. Tommy Cosgrove good Luck in your search for 308 GTB 21277 that you have been able to get the s/n for. Amazing you kept all those old pictures and could share them here.

    Correct, it's a five digit VIN...no more.

IF you copy the engine compartment frame stamping you have to add the 'stars' on either end of the VIN, but you still come up short of 17 characters.

F106AB * 22127 * (my car) still won't work in CARFAX or any other State Owned computer system.
I DO use that format on my insurance policy, the extra characters make them 'feel better"....(don't use the stars, they show as asterisks!)

In fact, it pizzes them off.......:D :D :D

So, we hide behind that cloak of secrecy.......;)

The State Handbook actually wants the model DESIGNATION ahead of the VIN, so
"308GTB22127" is what they are looking for, and there's not a document, or ID plate anywhere on the vehicle that matches that format...

The new owner likes it too much.

It's in good hands :) But I would love right of first refusal if he does ever decide to part with it...

He is a really nice guy.
