Hello all. I am in the process of negotiating a deal for a 2003 360 Spider. The dealer does not offer any third party warranties, which I thought was odd. Nonetheless, I would like to look into purchasing one directly. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I used to be a service manager in a large motorcycle dealership. I dealt with MANY extended warranty companies...some were good experiences, some just downright horrible...

Even though the dealership does not sell the warranties...perhaps you could talk to their service manager or a service writer to get their take on the matter...I'm sure they've dealt with third party warranties and they probably have a similarly broad range of positive through negative experiences.

No luck. They did not want to recommend anyone and said they do not work with any third party warranties. I tried the other dealer in the area and they told me that they have not seen one that actually pays up when a legitimate claim is made.

I've seen "certified pre-owned" 360s as old as 2001 model year. This car is on consignment and I guess, is not eligible...or so they tell me.

That's too bad. It takes a dealer willing to work with the third party companies...but, I understand their position...it takes a LOT of time...time for which there is no compensation.

Some of the extended warranty companies are legit and actually do pay for eligible repairs...some have so much fine print that it's hardly worth the effort of the first phone call. That is, like almost any business, there are good and bad. I wish I could make a recommendation, but I was on the motorcycle side and it's been a number of years.

They (3rd party extended warranties) are generally NOT as extensive as factory warranties.

Pretty much all third party warranties are a scam. Research the history on the vehicle(have the service department pull the service history) and do a proper PPI and take your chances. If it's a good car then you won't have problems. It's best to just save your money for what comes up.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am trying to set up a PPI but I think they have to clear it first with the consignor. Let's see where it goes from here.

My wife owns several Subaru Service Centers and we have delt with most of the so called aftermarket warranties, they ain't worth the cost.

1st let me make this very clear, these are NOt warranties, they are insurance policies with a deductable pure and simple. That said these companies are in the business to make a profit not pay claims.

Most recently we have seen a change in their outlook on claims. They now want to force a legitimate repair facility to do sub standard work using cheap aftermarket parts. They want discounts up to 40% on parts. They only want to pay a discounted percentage of your legitimate labor rate. So now you have a shop doing work for less than their regular profits, plus a kick back on parts with this so called discount. Do you think the tech or the shop is really going to take a personal interest in your baby while giving the insurance company most of your legitimate profit? We now tell our customers we will get as much as the company will allow and you the customer will pay the difference. Latley the customer has been paying more and more of the repairs.

I had one today from USAA telling me they would not pay for an OEM catalitic converter. They would only pay for a sub standard cat that we have tried to use in the past and had a 100% failure rate. The adjusters comment was we only have to warrant this repair for 45 days , do you think the cat will last that long?

Don't waste the money, buy a well inspected car, plan on paying for you own repairs where you can call the shots, get the best techs and the highest quality of parts. When customers ask our advice I always tell them don't waste the money.
