Now that Austin is on the official FIA calendar, will the race really happen?

  1. Yes, it will happen.

  2. No, no way for construction to finish.

Are you saying that because of NY/NJ? Or do you think the estimates were overly optimistic?

overly optimistic, and a bit limited in what they can count (or even prove really) i.e. can't count increased sales at restaurants, or retail stores....

I think a second GP would be very helpful in increasing the fan base in America

...come on Simon... you can't even begin to believe the NJ race is going to happen? Where is the funding? NJ can't afford to pay their teachers, they certainly can't host an F1 race!!

BTW, I think we should start a "USF1 GP NJ Speculation" - to keep the discussion moving I'll just repost your own threads/words whenever you say anything positive about the prospect of F1 coming to NJ ;)

Never have so many "worried" so much about "a few million" dollars in Texas..

    It's pretty sad really......IMO.

When times are good I'd wager the Texas Legislature spent that much on cigars and hookers......

    .....and trips to Oklahoma......LOL!

The politics around NJ sure would lead some to that conclusion. The local market alone and direct flights to NY from Europe will add to the appeal. Austin might happen but it doesnt look strong at all. This soap opera is only beginning.

TWS corrects all of the safety deficiencies that I identify. Whenever TWS receives a specific complaint, I inspect it and recommend the changes. But, 99% of the complaints are unfounded. If a driver is far enough off of the paving to damage his car, my recommendation is don't fix the car; fix the driver.

True, however putting a street race together is a lot simpler than building a track from scratch. Plus as you said filling seats in NY will also be a lot easier.

It has been a while so bear with me. I believe T8 is the left hander where you aim at the water tower before turn in, yes? If you walk the run out area you will notice it is heavy on washboards. I have seen the bottom of car torn to pieces in a get off. The runoff from T2 is also pretty bad. Moreover, dropping wheel at T6 can make things very interesting.

While not technically a safety issue (although I have seen cars flip in the ditch outside of T2), I find your cavalier attitude about run off areas distributing. We are talking about racing, yes? If so, I assume you have seen race cars spin out into the grass? My suggestion is you need to take a trip to Laguna Seca to see how its done.

Damn... there still pushing dirt. ;)

Here are some pics of the Indian GP Circuit. Similar to all recent new circuits.

Consider that Tavo / COTA have been working for 17 months,... and to make the 90 day inspection deadline, they have 10 months to go.

And the pictures you show of COTA construction are reassuring? It would be interesting to see the results of the poll if were re-done today...

Here are some pics of the Indian circuit from September 29, 2010, only 13 months prior to the race:

    Autosport just today http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/95834:

Sources have revealed that F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone informed team principals over the Indian Grand Prix weekend that there were also now minor question marks about the fate of the new Austin Grand Prix.

The situation in Austin appears more complicated, with Ecclestone suggesting that, while construction work is ongoing, there are issues inside the company that is putting the event together.

"I don't think they are struggling [with building the track] at all," he explained. "I think there has been a disagreement inside the company."

less than three weeks until they can reapply to the comptroller for the $25MM. I'm guessing the 'minor question marks' go away after that.

Unlikely. If Bernie's concern is only whether he'll get his $25M from Texas Taxpayers / METF,... it makes no sense for Bernie to publicly question the viability of the race immediately prior to Texas Gov't cutting that check.

Perhaps what Bernie said has no basis in reality, and is just interjecting doubt, to allow negotiations to go through with other venues

Sorry but that is also unlikely.

No salesman runs around saying XYZ aren't buying, in order to increase sales. To increase value of his product (a slot on the F1 Calendar) Bernie would want to show how he has an EXCESS of sites and doesn't need new sites. That allows him to charge higher fee's.

Consider Korea,... they want a discount. Floating the possibility that Austin may drop out hurts Bernie in that negotiation.

I do believe that everything Bernie says has multiple meanings,... but to portray this statement as Pro-Austin is quite optimistic IMHO.

Edit: but his comments may be quite good for this thread!
