QF pilots are not the highest paid. That honour belongs to Cathay Pacific (IIRC). Some of those senior B747 captains were on packages of up to $750k AUS from memory. QF pilots are paid similar money to that paid to other flagship carrier pilots (historically).

QF domestic captains make NOTHING like that sort of money ($500k).

QF should not have been floated. That's what ****ed it, imho. Now it's subject to market forces to such a degree that it's being cannibalized into a LCC and it's all about the bottom line. Won't be long before (if not already) it loses and resemblance to a national carrier. Jetstar with a rooted roo on the tail.

If the Australian government is not willing or able to provide support, they should split out the international business and sell it to the government.

Under government ownership, the new international business will "internalise" the considerable benefits associated with inbound tourism.

The new Qantas International would not contemplate a start-up business in Asia. Engineering, pilots, cabin crew and ground handling jobs in Australia would be saved. The major source of antagonism in the current conflict between Qantas and the unions is the large-scale shift of jobs offshore – this wouldn’t be an issue under nationalisation

 

Sure, let the taxpayer subsidise another failing business. Imagine how worse the work practices will become if it's run by public servants. The horror!

 

or let some other country own OUR utilities and run it into the ground until they have sucked all the capital out and THEN it gets nationalised to get rebuilt by the taxpayers ready for another takeover.

BTW I totally agree on the work practices side but there will always be a trade off, remember how bad Telecom or PMG use to be before competition turned up ...... now they are just abysmal, they use to be utterly hopeless.

Let's see what happens to NSW electricity now that it is privatised .... blackouts soon I'd say followed by HUGE increases
