This. Ferrari wanted a clear #2, so they get what they asked for. You can't have it boht ways. If they were more supportive of him (i.e. let him win!) he might be more motivated to do better. And on top of that I think the car is not the best right now which shows the extra talent of Alonso and exagerates Massa's lesser talent (but still a talent).

 

From what I read, he makes around €5M per year.

Yes, I can go with that why should Massa leave Hamilton room, I cannot think of one single reason why he would do that, I mean he knew he was there, so cop for that, he had nothing to lose.

I just can't work out why he took himself out of the race on the high kerbs, I mean why argue with a kerb when you already know the resulting consequences, having tried it earlier.

 

To be fair it's so close how all these guys take the curbs, even the orange ones. Shortly after Massa's retirement we got some onboard shots of Alonso going over one of those orange curbs as well. I guess he was more lucky than Massa.
It might have been better if Massa would steer well clear of the curbs but it's F1 and every hundreths of a second counts.

 

Some say "hey, Massa is not so slow, the problem is that Alonso is very fast". OK, I don´t agree with that, but let´s suppose it´s true: we can forgive his lack of speed, but still he has too many DNFs.

+1 And Phil is generally within a 10th or so. He's even been quicker on occasion - Both in qualy and race trim.

As I've said, he's certainly had one of his "weaker" seasons - Happens to all the long term jockeys along the way, but in fairness a lot of the DNF's haven't been his fault as we well know.

Having now read more about this incident than I ever really wanted to, it seems to me that the opinions here are about as equally divided on the incident as everyone elses;

33% Hami's fault
33% Phils fault
33% A racing incident for which no one should have been penalized.

All depends on who you dis/like it seems!

Re Massa staying with the Scud:

Is he ever going to succeed Alonso? No
Is he gong to win the WDC one day? No
Is he any different to the other Brazilian career number 2 - Rubens Barichello? No
Will anyone notice when he's gone? No
If he left and went to another team would he pose a threat to the Scud because of his performance potential? No

Is there any reason to keep him? No...

 

While I hear what you're saying, I still say they should keep him as he's the best, proven, option right now. I just don't see anyone that would be interested in replacing him (ie, another #2) being any better.

I didnt miss Kimi or Schumi when they left either. F1 moves on and there is alot of talent vying for a seat. No one is bigger than the sport. Ever.

 

Excellent Ian. Felipe will be around at lest through 2012. Team cars are usually set up for the supposed #1 driver, this year's lousy chassis suits Alonso just fine. Massa has done just fine with what he has been given.

 

Or put it another way:

Is he ever going to succeed Alonso? No: And it's not what Ferrari want from him, they want him to support Alonso.
Is he going to win the WDC one day? No: So long as he supports Alonso in getting WDC's then Ferrari are not going to be too concerned about it.
Is he any different to the other Brazilian career number 2 - Rubens Barichello? No: This being the same Barrichello that helped Schumacher get 5 of his WDC's? Ferrari are hoping for the same from Massa.
Will anyone notice when he's gone? No : Depends, if the next driver partnership ends up like Alonso and Hamilton did at McLaren then I'm sure there will be people saying how much better things were with Alonso and Massa.

Is there any reason to keep him? No: Actually yes there is, because he makes it easier for Ferrari to concentrate on getting WDC's with Alonso

 

He needs to run right behind Alonso to give any support, not 30 seconds behind. And when he finally manages to run first, he should let his faster and still with some chances at the WDC team mate pass when he´s asked for inmediately and without stupid moves (i.e: Germany 2010).

The problem with Massa right now is not that he´s not a front runner: he´s not even a good number 2. Barrichello was often on the podium, won races and score good points. Even Irvine was helpful sometimes.

The only one who´s happy with Massa right now probably is Alonso: he often got nervous when a team mate was faster than him. With Massa, this doesn´t happen very often.

I still keep some hope: let´s wait and see what happens in 2012. But if Felipinho can´t rise his game and has another mediocre season (three in a row), it will time to move on.

 

On that note you're wrong: Lots of people will notice and be happy about it. Including folks in Maranello. He has clearly worn out his welcome.

 

I totally agree that next season will most likely be the last chance for Massa to prove he's worthy of the Ferrari seat and that he's only going to do that by upping his game big time, but it's a fact that it does suit Ferrari to have him along side Alonso as it's then easy for Alonso to naturally dominate in the team.

This is where the idea of replacing Massa with Rosberg could possibly backfire. the last thing Ferrari want to do is upset Alonso and I suspect Rosberg would be much more loathed to assist Alonso than Massa is.

 

I'm not a Tifosi but even I think that Ferrari should command the very best drivers on the grid.
Is Massa one of them ?
