Translation from article - "The driver had the new car, a twelve-cylinder Ferrari FF type tested, and it suddenly heard a loud bang. He looked in the rearview mirror flames from the tail beat, stopped immediately and was able to escape unharmed."

Shouldn't the flames be coming from the front?

yes, clearly I have been too harsh in my criticism of this car. AWD, basically a station wagon, too big, too heavy, too ugly.

but then it goes and sets itself on fire.

clearly I was wrong; it's definitely a true Ferrari :)

would one of these failures create a loud popping sound in the rear part of the car?

Just saw pics of the burnt car, didn't recognise it as an FF - more like a SLK.

Person who works at the dealer said the car is now in Italy and they haven't found out yet what it was.

Well in the initial post from me I included the newspaper article, I wasn't there in person.

Car was sold by Saggio in Offenbach near Frankfurt and I privately met a woman who works there by chance. I tried to talk her into sending me her pics but she wouldn't want it...

Yeah, and you'll wish it was on fire if you were stranded in the middle of nowhere, in January, freezing you butt off.... :)

I will not reveal any names but my friend who was driving is ok, he managed to bring the FF to a stop and get out before the car was engulfed in flames, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

They should name their next model 'Ignitor' or 'Flame', or something like that.
