I remember it well. The organisers in their infinite wisdom decided to have the red stage finish sign about 100 mtrs AFTER a huge blind crest in the road, and this after a downhill straight. The 512BB accelerated over the rise, got way light over the top of the crest, came down with the arse sideways and launched off into the scenery. It went through a fence and took out a telephone pole, which entered the car across the navigators feet and then proceeded through to the other side of the car, smashing the drivers legs as it went. To make matters worse, the drivers seat belt snapped and he ended up across the dash binnacle. We were about 6 cars after it happened as I recall. There is footage of the accident in that years Targa video- 1992 ? Bear in mind this was the first event and there were none of the later safety regulations in place. You basically ran road cars and helmets were amazingly enough, optional. At the time it was billed as an alternative to the Grand Prix rally which was a bit of a tour.
Having witnessed first hand the effects of a side impact on a porsche and the resultant damage I also find that pug accident hard to believe considering what a tree looks like inside a car
Its hard to believe that anyone would survive that crash. Its been on facebook for a while, there is a support page for them where people can post their well wishes; one post says he is out of intensive care and its dated 2009 http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=69362793043&v=wall Never met him so dont take my word for it.
you met him? Now its "never met him". Make up your mind, either you did or didn't.........."scratches head"
If u look at the page its in Danish, all he's done is translated it and posted it here. It comes across as though Mr Rotorys wrote it though.
My son has just informed me it was 1994,J Wales was the driver. Don't know how I could have forgotten.....it was my first.Must have happened after I went through in my older/slower Volvo. Rollbars and harnesses did'nt come mandatory until 95/96.(What were they thinking) '96 was TT's death,we were staying at the same pub,an MX5 went into a,you guessed it,powerpole sideways and the navigator perished.
It ended up in court for years afterwards. Navigator sued driver and both sued the organisers if i remember correctly. MX5 was tragic, I had given up Tarmac Rallies by that stage.
Was there no third party insurance applicable? I suppose its a closed road just like the double in Adel at CA 09....the fatalities were never recorded as official road toll because of the closed road thing, but I always thought 3rd party bodily injury would apply
I don't know all the details. Unfortunately there are many people with permanent disabilities as a result of Tarmac Rallies. Another one that comes to mind is Andy M. who left the road at speed and planted a tree in the drivers door. The car was a banana around the tree about 4ft off the ground.
Yep I posted the link where the info came from and translated it in case some peoples browser doesnt translate it automatically.
I didn't think that at all when I read it. I didn't click on the link because I assumed it was a direct 'cut and paste'. When I do it though, I make it bold so it's easier to read and to stop any confusion.
That is crap, that means you didnt read the post you put up just cut and pasted it. Blaming people's browsers is also crap......take responsibility and blame yourself for posting information that is incorrect.
Exactly correct........I see back peddle Pap, never assume anything If its read it states really simply, he met him. Clearly he doesnt read what he posts.
I was going to ask how your friend was, then i worked out how you just cut/pasted. Thus i withdraw my question to you.
which part is correct? that you met him or didnt meet him Dont throw this back on me or anyone else... Considering the impact too many people have died from very similar situations and having witnessed first hand the resultant damage of a tree/ side impact crash.....dying would be the preferred option.
