"As it is, the new 911 laps the Nordschleife in 7:40 seconds, 14 seconds quicker than the model it replaces."

Glad mom will be home sooner with the beer.

What's with all the 911 hate? Did you just get out driven by a soccer mom in her 911?

Car mags are comics books for older kids, they are one persons opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

"The last of the last"...where have I heard that before ?? Oh yeah, now I remember:

-1965: End of an era; 356 replaced by the bigger, heavier, 6 cyl 911
-69: end of an era; 911 wheelbase increased..thrill of driving is gone
-73: end of an era; longhood 911's replaced by bumper cars with CIS injection
-89: end of an era; torsion bar 911 replaced by 964 which only looks like a 911
    -95: end of an era; bug-eye 911 replaced by "928" like 993
-98: end of an era; aircooled 911 replaced by (gasp) watercooled 911
-2011: end of an era; 997 replaced by 991 with longer wheelbase (where have I heard that before)

I have owned all of them--from 1972 to 2011-- and the new ones are always better

Well the 996 was a bit of a dud, reemerging as the 997 which had some serious sharpening before it came into its own. 964 was also a dud. Does the 901 have the core structure to make a great GT3, does porche have the engine to do so, do they care. Or maybe we get a great cayman now?. Based on what scant info we have so far, it sounds like the 901 is a neutered 911.

Car mags are essentialy sponsored by the manufacturers through ads and loaners. very seldom do you read something negative. For autoweek to do anything but praise the 901 iundicates some serious concern.

But yes so far the info is scant.

They wouldn't have made it if it didn't. The last evolution of the 997 RSR was recently released. http://www.worldcarfans.com/111110437958/2012-porsche-911-997-gt3-rsr-unveiled/highphotos#0

The 2013 RSR will certainly be a better car than the 997. Don't forget that Porsche is in the business of selling race cars & they haven't made a bad one in many, many years.

+1 on comic books = car mags. I myself went from reading Archie comics to Road&Track at seven years old. And, if I didn't get influenced by car mags, I'd probably would have become a Ferrari fan before becoming a Porsche fan.

Back to 991, all is on schedule to morphing the street sporty 911 to a GT car...albeit a very capable one. This won't stop me from buying it especially since there are better car options to satisfy my track/race hobby.

    Well said.

I do miss the '73 RS. It was something.

new ones are always faster...not sure about better. better is subjective if you are asking porsche purists. faster is not so subjective.

i will never yield from my position of the 930 turbo being one of the greatest and most important (for obvious reasons ) sports cars in history. i am not certain any of the newer 911's will compete for that title...but i could be proven wrong.

Me too. I've quit betting against Porsche's ability to outdo itself. It's almost uncanny. The 997 is a 911 everybit as much as any I've ever driven. (only better ;)) My bet is this one is even better yet...(if history is any guide).

    Can't wait to drive it.

ps...I do agree there's been a couple of exceptions. As there are to every rule that lasts 4-5 decades.

Just to provide some counterpoint, Autoblog's Michael Harley was on hand at the Santa Barbara launch and wrote up a very positive review.

    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/11/2012-porsche-911-carrera-s-first-drive-review/

Mr. Harley personally owns a 930. Additionally, Porsche had an '85 Euro Club Sport pulled from the museum for comparison.

If you really feel it's gone too soft, buy the GT3 or a Cayman R.

BTW, the real automotive tragedy is the new 3-series. First drive reviews are fairly negative. That, my friends, is the end of an era.

Well Chris Harris certainly seemed to enjoy his time behind the wheel of a 2012 Carrera S model...
