If you found a wallet say at a gas station with cash & credit cards would you attempt to contact owner? If cash was $1.00? $100.00? $1,000.00? What would you do?

Return it exactly as I found it. That's what I would want someone to do for me.

I've lost my wallet before and thought someone had taken it, but I got a call the next day from where I had lost it (my college classroom) and I picked it up a few hours later, everything untouched. I just wish I knew who found it so I could have thanked them personally.

Sure, it would cross my mind to keep the cash but I would certainly return the wallet as I FOUND it, its the right thing to do. Its all about karma for me. I bet more people than not would take the money, so sad really. I would want someone to return MY wallet as found so I would do the same for them.

I'd take the cash out, write a check for that amount to the name on the drivers license and mail it to that address along with the rest of the wallet...hopefully the address is up to date.

I recall a story from years ago where the Police at the Seattle airport were "planting" stolen wallets and cuffing people if they didn't take them straight to security. Even if you don't trust security, I guess the lesson is that if you find a wallet, be careful what you do with it, "big brother" may be watching.

Why write a check and not just mail everything as you found it?

Have done this 3 times in my life.... doesn't matter to me how much cash
is in it - makes no difference to me. It once took a couple days to find
the owner, and he actually accused me of STEALING it before I convinced
him I had found in the road and not a thing was missing.

    Yes, this.

I would return it untouched, even if it had $100,000 in it.

....now if I happened across a bag in a ditch with $100,000 and some bags
of white substance with a small scale, well.... let's just say I might reconsider

I have returned several.. It really surprised me that the owner was so surprised to be getting it back. But as stated above, I would return it as found.....

You're right... I woudn't be trying to return some drug dealers money. But, it might end up at a worthy charity --- maybe for drug users to help them stop.

I found a wallet on campus once, looked up the address on the drivers license and dropped it off at his house. Turns out it was a high school kid touring the college to see if he wanted to attend school there, I graduated high school with his older brother.

Of course you return it, 5 min before I read this post the national news had a story tonight where they planted a wallet on a park bench in NY to see who is honest in a big city, one guy even went as far as to go through it to find a phone number (they planted a biz card to see if anyone would call), he called it and waited for the owner to show (the news crew showed to thank him), another person flagged down the police and turned it in they were both 40+ years old, the other two parties took the money, the two parties that took the money were 18-22ish years old Jersey Shore types.

I'd take it a step further and hunt down their parents and let them know how bad of a job they did raising there kid and put it on national tv.

I found a wallet a couple years ago. It took me a week to get in touch with its owner but by then he'd already cancelled all his cards O_O He was really grateful and amazed that I had taken the trouble to track him down and return it exactly as I found it though.

Even though I would return the wallet, I cant see why its illegal if you don't turn in a lost wallet..

    uh huh......

While it sounds great and creative on teH IntArWebS and all, if you were to actually do that you'd end up having your check cloned and your own account drained!

At first, I would rather go through it hoping to find a way to contact the guy and call him to give it back (rather than mail it to a possible B/A) but if there was no way then off to the PO it goes!
