WTH? I must have agreed to something in the new 42 page license agreement
when my Macbook updated iTunes for my iPad.

Now, I have 2 options: Back up my iTunes to iCloud or to My Computer. I
want neither. My entire iTunes library is on an external drive that I already
back up. I don't need or want a "backup option" in iTunes.

I do NOT want iCloud - can someone please tell me where I can turn it off/delete
it from this computer?? (Macbook + Snow Leopard)? I've gone through every
option and tab in both iTunes Preferences, and in System Prefs.

Please (please!) don't let this turn into a big iCloud pros/cons debate. I really
just want to know how to uninstall or turn if off in iTunes on the computer itself.

Thanks!

somewhat similar question...I signed up for icloud, which I like in a lot of ways; but "my" music is no longer stored on my computer or, even worse, my iphone.

here's the problem: I can now only access my music when I have an internet connection. I'm too cheap to pay for wifi on a plane. I only really listen to music on my iphone when I'm on a plane. oops

so....any way of getting my music back onto my phone?

From what I've been Googling, NO - it's GONE - unless you go to iCloud
from your computer and download each item one at a time

Apple = Microsoft of the 21st Century.

Surely someone knows how to turn this stupid iCloud crap off.... I can't
use the "backup to this computer" because I don't have enough hard disc
space left on the drive.... but if I select iCloud, all my stuff moves to Heaven
with Steve Jobs and leaves my device forever.

Update: Well, after reading LOTS of posts at various forums, it seems the ONLY
OPTION is to delete iCloud on the device (iPad, iPhone)... and just accept you're
going to lose everything.

But after deleting iCloud from the iPad, iTunes still is demanding I select either iCloud
for backup or "this computer" (which doesn't have nearly enough hard drive - I keep
my entire iTunes library on an external drive).

How do I get around this????

Come on Mac Experts - apple products are supposed to be so intuitive a 3-year old
can use them... everything "just works".... so I'll play the noob and just ask. HOW
DO I GET THIS BACKUP OPTION OUT OF iTUNES?

Please and thank you for any help. Very frustrated with this at the moment...

Ok here goes:

1) iTunes isn't trying to back up your library, it's trying to back up your iPad's settings, apps, general settings, contacts, email accounts etc. Just back it up to your computer.

2) What exactly do you have connected with iCloud that you don't want to lose once you delete the account?

3) On iPad: Settings>iCloud>Delete Account - It's all the way at the bottom.

4) Chas, did you sign up for iTunes Match, that is the only reason why you might not have your music, I haven't played with it much, but see if there is an option just to turn it off.

5) On your computer iCloud is under your system preferences not iTunes, click the upper-left Apple logo and select system preferences and it's under Networking and Internet.

My problem is that I don't have 32gb of free space to back up my iPad on my
Macbook - I'm down to 10 gb free that won't change. So backing up to my
laptop is not an option.

I already deleted iCloud from the iPad - no problem.

But iTunes gives me only 2 choices and I MUST pick one of them: either backup
to my computer, or to iCloud!! There's no "turn it off" or "don't backup" option.

I found this site after an hour of Googling - looks promising but it doesn't work
as it was typed in - it's a Terminal command line:

http://www.ehow.com/how_8378166_disable-backing-up-iphone.html

Can anyone with Terminal know-how maybe check that link and figure out
what is wrong with the posted syntax so it will work?

Again - please don't turn this into a "but why do you want to?" thread... I just
need to figure out how to disable backups and do exactly that.

Thanks for any help,

Jedi

yep, signed up for match. as I understand it, my music doesn't exist on the hard drive of either device, only in the cloud; so turning match off won't work.

Can you still log into your Cloud account via computer? If so, you're supposed
to be able to still download all your songs (one at a time )

Ah..... the lovely little garden of happiness and intuitiveness that is Apple.

Here's that Terminal command from my link above, along with the eHow
instructions.... but the command does nothing. Hopefully someone with
Terminal knowledge can look at the bold highlight below and figure out
where the command is wrong:

Mac Instructions
1
Close the iTunes application.

2
Click on the "Finder" icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen.

3
Navigate to the "Applications" section of your hard drive.

4
Open the "Utilities" folder and double-click on "Terminal."

5
Type "defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true" into the empty command prompt window and hit "Return" to run the command.

UPDATE: Found this post - it all worked (after downloading Pref Setter) - but I still see the Backup option
in iTunes - I'm doing a test right now with 6 gb of movies being synced - once that's done I'll disconnect,
then resync and see if Finder shows my hard drive space diminished by another 6gb - if it's not, then it
must in fact be working.

"download a plist editor program (i used "pref setter")
open com.apple.itunes.plist in your plist editor
find DeviceBackupsDisabled and ensure it's either unchecked or false
save and close and reopen itunes"

In Googling, there seem to be lots of Windows instructions on how to do this as well, via the Registry.

See? Intuitive! My 3-year old could do it!

:D:D

Ok... that appears to have worked. No mandatory backup to iCloud or "This Computer"
of what's on the iPad, despite the option still being in iTunes.

However, forget about syncing my movies (ripped/compressed DVDs to MP4 Mac compatible
format - it takes an HOUR per movie, at 1gb each). I'll just stick to my
Netbook - 227 ripped DVDs on the hard drive - I can move all of them from
one drive to another in about an hour (all 227 - enough time to sync one or
two movies via iBloatTunes to the iPad).

Anyway, current problem solved.

Intuitive!!!

:)

Jedi, iTunes won't back up all of your stuff, just the settings and text files of what's on your iPad, I'll have to look but my backup files for my iPhone and iPad are no more than 30mb.

I believe it should still be on your computer, I can't imagine Apple would delete all your music. Match doesn't interest me at all so I haven't bothered with it. I'd try calling Apple and they should be able to sort you out.

Is this something to do with Match?

When I bought some songs on iTunes (PC) recently, they automatically downloaded to my iPad and my iPhone.

Are you saying the songs are available on your phone, but they stream when you play them?

(added: Does match tell you what songs it matched and made available in the cloud? It's supposed to upload anything it can't match. Bottom line is that everything is supposed to me available to all of your devices. I you buy a new song does it go to your phone?)

right, as long as I have an internet connection (wifi or 3G), I have all my songs.

no internet connection, no songs.

cloudy with a chance or music?

How about after you play a song - will it show without a connection?

Plug in your phone and open iTunes and see what it says under the music tab.
