She is in the 16 foot range, she spends more of her time in her enclosure. I also have a few other snakes but she is the largest for now.

This is an honest question and not intended to offend the OP.

What kind of appeal does a 16ft snake hold for its owner?

While it probably couldn't kill a grown man or woman, it could certainly kill a child, and lay a nasty bite onto anyone it wants.

It doesn't have a personality like a dog, bird, or cat. I guess I just don't get it.

Would there ever be a size where you would consider the animal too large and dangerous (20ft?) to be around your family?

I was working after hours, had a snake at the time clock when I was leaving, we got it into a box and left it as I didn't have time to deal with it.

Ended up one of the guys who came in that morning, got a small place for it, later someone else caught a sibling in the building, now we've had two snakes for about two months, recently outgrew their second home, so now are in a larger one.

They are fascinating to watch. I'd definitely not have my kid sleeping next to a large constrictor, I've seen what these little guys can do to whatever live food gets put in with them.

And yes, snakes do have personality.

Get him a Ball Python, they stay small and like to be held by kids. It's a great pet snake for a kid, very tolerant snakes.

For starters the Reticulated Python is one of the most intelligent Reptiles, mostly because it can reason on a level superior to most reptiles.

Retics quickly learn cage activites like routine cleaning, easily differentiate between humans, and learn locations like their cage, etc. Yes Retics and most giant snakes display individual characteristics unique to that particular animal rangeing from seeking out attention by following their owners all the way to opening their mouths and waiting for you to feed them (they are very greedy animals). I work in the legal field and my Fiancee is a nurse, time is something we do not have very much of. Snakes fit perfectly into our lives since they need very little attention and do not mind minimal human intereaction.

As far as safety goes, I do not know what people expect from a Captive Bred Python. CB Reticulated Pythons are the results of generations of captive breeding for selective traits such as behavior, feeding tendencys, and color pigmentation. They are not the same as a wild snake. Maybe because I have very strong connections to law enforcements I view snake attack as very low on my concern list: gang violence, human trafficking, tainted food, dangerous medicene, all keep me up at night but not my snake sleeping in her locked enclosure. In the history of snake keeping, less than 15 people in America have been killed by their pet snake, and Giant Snakes like Retics, Burmese Pythons, and Green Anacondas are kept by thousands of owners. Comments like yours makes it sound like I am and people who keep any large animal are just plain idiots, like we do not take any precautions when dealing with are pets. Why dont people ask horse owners do they let their babies ride adult horses unsupervised or let attack Pit Bulls play with infants covered in chicken broth?

I do not mean to be so critical of your points but I hate misinformation, and the giant snake keeping community really get tired of people making incorrect statements about the animals involved and the people that take care of them. It is really on the same level as when people come on this forum and ask "why are Ferraris overpriced when they are unreliable, or are you just buying an expensive car like that because you are insecure about yourself, and the good old only rich snobs own Ferraris". Misinformation makes all of us suffer.

In the history of snake keeping,... Sorry that is just wrong.

I was referring to Large Snakes like Retics since that is what the topic was about, I did not think I needed to specify because my post was to rebuttle Tundraphile and was directed at him and the statements he made about large snakes.

Looks pretty nifty to me, but it wouldn't fly in my house for 3 reasons:

    1) We have 3 dogs that wouldn't interact well with such a critter.

    2) House is kept at 68 in the summer and 62 in the winter (cooler at night) due to wife's asthma.

    3) My wife doesn't like snakes.

The lady in the picture is my Fiancee and she is 24...It is okay she gets carded wherever we go.

A few years ago I helped track down a contract killer that told me something like that, only he was referring to a napkin I had and commented that it reminded him of some human remains the he kept as souvenirs. Yep, always an interesting day when you tag around in law enforcement.

I've got a jungle carpet python that is still pretty small. It will never get that big. Snakes can make great, low maintenance pets. That snake is big enough to kill a man. You'd be much more likely to be killed by someone you already know though.

Cool. Jungle Carpet are smaller than Retics but they are strong as an ox. They really are one of the more beautiful pythons, I love the black and yellow colors.

    Again, another sincere question...

Once you get married, do you plan to have kids?

How would an infant or toddler interact with this animal?
