I am wanting to do a thorough clay bar/lightly polish/wax job on my daily driver as well as my wife's car. I would like to use one of the newer polymer waxes or sealers so it will be fairly long lasting. I have only used carnuba based products in the past, but between maintaining several vehicles, having a one year old running around the house, work, and umpteen other hobbies, I just can't take the time to wax our everyday cars every couple of months.

    A few questions:

Is there a difference in stuff marketed as a polymer wax vs. a sealer?

Any tips for application? Any big differences between these and carnuba?

How long do these products really last for?

Any recommendations on which brand to use or stay away from?

I like the Klasse products...All-in-One and High Gloss Sealer. Use VERY sparingly or you will have a hard time buffing it out. A random orbit machine helps. Easily lasts 6 months. For a deep shine, follow with a couplw coats of wax.

    My favorite winter waxes are:

    Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax #845
    BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond
Klasse All-In-One + Klasse High Gloss Sealant
Menzerna Power Lock Polymer Paint Sealant

    Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax #845:
Very easy to apply and to remove. Gives a very nice shine and glow. Very long lasting durable wax

    BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond:
I just tried this wax 2 weeks ago. Very easy to apply and to remove. Dont know how long it will last since I just applied it 2 weeks ago but was told it should last 6 months

    Klasse All-In-One
    Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze:
This is a very good product. It lasts a very long time and will easily last an entire winter for me. Its a two step system so its time consuming. The sealant can be a pain to remove if applied to thick. The cleaner (All-in-one) is my all time favorite cleaner that can be used on anything including windows.

Menzerna Power Lock Polymer Paint Sealant
I have not tried it but heard from many people that they love this product.

The secret to a long lasting wax is to prep the paint and remove any contaminants thats on the paints surface. A sealant needs to bond to the paint surface.
There are many waxes on the market today but I noticed many of them will only last a month

I'm also a huge fan of Klasse Sealant Glaze. While it's good to do, it's not a must to use/apply Klasse All in One before the sealant, but you definitely will benefit from as much of a full detail (prep wash, clay bar, polish) as possible before the sealant application. I wrote an article on the Klasse Sealant Glaze application, which should ease the pain of removing it for some who mentioned it above... http://www.detailedimage.com/Ask-a-Pro/klasse-high-gloss-sealant-glaze-ksg-guide-and-review/

A couple coats easily last me through a Chicago winter with regular washing every 1-2 weeks. If you wash more often or with aggressive soaps it'll definitely affect the durability.

Aside from KSG, I'm a big fan of Blackfire Wet Diamond as well. I find it a bit easier to use due to an easier removal process, but at the same time if you apply too much you'll have to spend a bit longer removing it.

Thank you ! I use All in One all the time and love it. KSG and I have a love-hate relationship. I love what it does but I find it a total beeatch to use. I must give that method a shot.

To the OP, I use Meguiars #21 on my DD over AIO. 21 lasts 3-4 months and will get me thru the harsh winters with 1 treatment in the fall.

Unless its a coating, then I wouldnt get into the hype of 2+ years! sealants and waxes dont last that long, no matter what the manufacture will tell you UNLESS you never wash, drive, wipedown, or always keep it inside.

coatings like optimum opti-coat, CQuatz, AQuartz, etc will provide you will longer lasting, durable protection that can last 2 years, but those are a different type of product, definitely not a wax. HD nitro seal is supposed to provide a year or so of protection and its classified as a stronger sealant wax. Ive applied it to about 6 cars now and the finish on all of them looks better than the cars that I have opti-coated, but at the same time, will not last as long as opti-coat.

Great input Eric. Definitely agree with the hype of waxes and sealants lasting years, or even one year. With very careful/mild weekly washing most I've seen out of KSG is about 3-4 months. Based on that I will always recommend sealant to be applied every 6-10 weeks, depending on the conditions.

I've been using a product called Wolfgang paint sealant on a friends Porsche for a while and seems to be working well.
