Gasoline mixed with oil mixed with rubber mixed with paint mixed... Describe your favorite smell in the driveway. Cup your hands over the exhaust tip & what do you smell? Is it the fine Italian leather inside? When you run the engine hard & go under the hood what is the aroma? What do you smell on your sweatshirt much later that says "my car"?

When it's been running a couple of minutes and I don't detect any funny smells or noises.

    Basically, you're right!

However, an acute sense for strange electrical smells and not just so mechanical noises does develop over years of ownership.

I've got to ask... how did raccoon urine get into you car? And why didn't you clean it up before it went stale? :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Left the car in the driveway with the window open. Didn't realize animals could be a**h*les, too. Now I know why they have those black robber markings on their faces...

Drive the Ferrari hard and enter my garage hours later...

The smell of a "Ferrari oven" still lingers. An intoxicating mix of leather, rubber, dino-juice, warm metal and beautiful girls. Smells like *Victory*

The Italians and the Brits both had it down in their old cars but a bit different. I like smelling the inside of the car and getting the interior smell combined with a touch of baked on motor oil, I call it the smell of a used engine block, it's almost as if the cast iron has it's own odor. A bit of fuel and the last ingredient which sometimes is in the air and maybe sometimes only in my mind, but it is the smell of wiring. That faint smell of a promise of electrical failure, that is what brings it all together.

Down in the LA basin is a museum that is owned by the owner of Herbalife. Fantastic collection. Many cars are just old and used and he keeps them in an old olive oil pressing plant. He allows visitors for a small donation. Most cars have the driver window open and I had a field day of leaning my head inside these old, driven, sometimes rusty exotics and taking a deep breath. Just a bunch of good honest cars. They were packed in too, I had to walk sideways between them because they were in their so tight. It may be my favorite collection of cars ever. It was like having free reign in someones very cool personal garage.

Racing fuel exhaust has a distinct smell that reminds me of my
first sports car races - 1964 at Road America.
