Thanks for the feedback -- makes perfect sense with your reported symptom of blowing that fuel pump fuse (which it always does in hindsight ). Seems odd though that they'd have such an area so exposed to running "aground" -- aren't those terminals located somewhat above the bottom of the chassis frame for protection?

Nope.
Right on the bottom on the pump.

On my 348 there is a metal cover that goes over the bottom of the tank, and "protects" those pump terminals.

 

If you are also saying that the bottom of the pump is essentially flush with the bottom of the chassis frame (less a flimsy cover), I'm gonna have to put that one in the "not the best design" pile

 

If the other one was still good I would put it back in. That way you can save the new one for when you really need it. But it's up to you if you wanna crawl back under the car or not.
