288 GTO bodywork has both fit & finish variances. This is besides the doors/hoods/gas & oil-cap fitment, all of which is adjustable. So we are speaking of fender and front spoiler & rear valance mounting. That's well-established.

Shouldn't be the case with USA F40s, apart from the doors and the front & rear clam-shells (& lower valance) all of which are adjustable.

Sorry Joe you've lost me. You are saying 8mm height variation across the length of the rear fender is normal?

At least the left side is higher so when I sit in it it might even level out...

I wouldn't say that's the case with all the cars, or mine, but Ive seen that type of variance before, yes. Consider your car 'special'.

Just sold a fantastic 288 GTO to Georgia.

I'd like to know if anyone is aware of any others in that state?

Does Ed have a GTO in the collection at the dealership?

How many GTO's would you say are still in North America? 23?

Ed's GTO has gone to one of the most discerning gentleman collectors I have encountered in my time :) A like-new time-warp it is.

I'd say there are somewhere between 25 and 30 cars stateside at any given time...

Thanks Joe! Does Ed at least still have that 1991 'Euro delivery' USA market F40?

14383 the USA 1971 Daytona Spyder (another time-warp example) had also left his collection years ago...

Regarding fit and finish on 288s, I've seen, and heard of, some great variances. That said, I have always been advised to stay away from the both the first and last few of a production run. In general, this is due to the fact that the first few require some learning curve, and the last few are the leftover parts that didn't fit all that well during the normal production run anyway. Thus, if you have one of the first, or the last, you might seem some unusual fit and finish qualities.

One good story. I don't know the s/n on this car, but it was inspected by a VERY well-known and regarded body shop in PA. Anyway, the driver side door had a funny look about it, and, upon inspection, the line was bowed out overall and then pinched in at the center. After popping the interior panel, it was discovered that a block of wood was bondo'd to the inside of the door panel. It had been sprayed over with paint, and then safety-wired to the in-door safety crossbar. This explained the "pinching", but the door panel itself just didn't fit correctly. Not at all.

Just revel in the knowledge that you have a hand-built car.

I agree with your theory as regards the first few cars, but with the last cars it assumes that the parts used were discard parts?

I wouldn't characterize them as being discarded. Merely that they were the last available and, if they didn't fit properly, there were no others to select from to try and find a better fit. However, they may have been rejected for poor fit when they were fitted earlier in the run and just put back into the supply lot.
