I have always loved the DP cara from the 80's; my singular favorite Porsche.
Imagine my pure shock when I find out my neighbor two doors away owns one. He said he bought it at an auction in LA; previously owned by Michael Andretti. (not Mario, who I know also had one)

Does anyone have info on this? No one at the DP registry site has seen this car; but it's the real deal. I crawled all around it.
I don't exactly live in LA or Miami al finding one here is a major shock.

Can anyone post pictures for me? I'm sending this from my iPhone

Btw - the owner is a collector who isn't selling it, but if he were he will give me the first shot at it....

that is a cool car...love the DPs! :)

does anyone know of a list of all the cars (Supercars, at least) owned by the Andretti family...between Mario, Michael and Marco, lots of Ferraris and Lambos, some Porsches, a McLaren F1...

Thanks for posting this badges. Purple is not my favorite color, but it has silver BBS wheels (the whole car looks wicked)
    Definitely a head turner.

Anyone know how many DP's were made in the 80's?

    Thanks
    Kevin

Thanks; I meant to add the words 'DP' to the thread title....can that be changed? Makes it easier for searching in the future...l

I am not sure anyone knows how many dp made. There are a lot of Porsches out there with the dp bodies that were not done by dp. The real ones from dp are very rare and were exceptionally expensive for their time. Other than my car (which is exactly same except for color) and this one, I know of only 2 other real dp cabs in the US.

Congrats to your neighbor. These are great cars.

Mine is unusual in that it is a normally aspirated car - so probably around 300 hp. The car is fairly light so it is still pretty quick. It has the upgrade dp suspension so it carries speed very well. It really is a joy to drive. Yes, it is pictured on the dp site. Here is a pic with one of its stablemates and a birth pic at dp.

As much as I love Ferrari's (including my own); am I not the only one that is aroused by these DP photos? It's ok to admit it!
Btw - the Michael Andretti car is about 500 feet from me right now

Kevin, I have to agree. I enjoy mine as much if not more than any of my other cars. It is a decent performer and over the top looks. Photos do not do these cars justice. They have a very agressive look. I also get much more interest/reaction from people to this car than to any of my other cars by far. And it is a Porsche...most reliable car I have ever owned.

Without documentation from DP or from the U.S. dealers it's near impossible to say who did the conversion. There were 2 Porsche dealers in the mid 80's importing them. One was Fred Opert, the other was a Chicago dealer. The ones I read about were turbos ordered from the factory and sent to DP before coming here. They were in the $109K range. The DP's were customer speced. The mods range from just the body panels to pretty much everything on their option sheet, body, interior, wheels, suspension, motor.
I know of 2 Mario Andretti DP's, a blue coupe and red Kremer K2 (DP body w/Kremer motor).
There's a race shop in SoCal that does DP conversions on race cars and the 964, 993, 996 base street cars.
Kevin, what motor is in the cab?

I should have taken a picture of the engine when the owner showed me.
He said it had twin turbos, also it had air conditioning which he heard was a rare option.
(I didn't think that was rare, but I could be wrong). It had the larger DP intercooler like I have seen on other DP's....
There was a knob between the seared that I assume was the turbo boost; I couldn't tell.
This car looks wicked; the DP emblem on the front is silver (hard to tell in these photos), bu you can see it on the rear.

I'm beginning the long process of convincing the owner (a collector) to sell this car to me.

Also - where is the vin located? I'll try and get a picture the next time I see it

The Porsche vin is in 2 places, the drivers side A pillar (look through the windshield), and on the chassis between the gas tank and smugglers box cover on the left side. The US 930's start with a 930 vin, the "rest of world" ones start with a WOPZZZ.

Yes, boost knob between the seats. You should also check the wheel & tire combination.
See if the owner has any documentation on the car, motor etc.

Twin turbo, that would be fun, good luck.

Just wondering; are the DP graphics painted? Or decals?
Always wondered about that. I have seen a few DP's with no stripes....
    Thanks

On my car, the stripes are painted. The "dp motorsport" on the rocker panel beneath the door is a decal.
