i know my grill is original and the horns were a mettalic candy red when i got the car and looked as if they had never been touched ? I just assumed that was original. Gary 8394
Gary, I've seen a couple other series 2 cars in magazine layouts from that time with the slobbered on black paint. But you know how things went back then. They may have done that for a month and then that guy got fired and they skipped that step. My horns were black as they came from Fiamm too. Only the tubing was red. They even painted over the Fiamm labels on the ends! Leave yours as is. I'll have a talk with the judges at Pebble next year. I have a very nice Beretta I can show them while I'm there ...
You're wrong. Both Bob and Gary are right. I've seen Espadas with (originally) red hose/black painted horns, others with red hose/ red horns (photo of 8074), others with clear hose/black painted horns. Lamborghini originally did about anything. So you don't like my "amature" front grill with red horns? Also my red ignition wires I presume? What the heck! It's my car and I want it effectively that way.. Philippe S2 7987 www.lamborghinimiura.com Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi ! I just want to help you out here ; the horns were NORMALLY " CANDY RED " original from factory, you are absolutely correct on that. However , in some special cases they used another colour , silver , so here is the link to an original Lamborghini colour chart with some production numbers ; enjoy. (look down on the list.) The horns were normally placed in the engine bay , on the inner fender , by the brake boosters , but they could be located other places. There is an extra electric circuit in some espadas to connect an electric "city horn" if you opted for it from the factory, but this is not mounted on my car. I do believe a location for that horn would be in the grill. ( a weaker horn ). And YES , there is probably not many lamborghinis who are exactly the same , they were all a little different in some way - the factory did many strange things , sometimes on request. http://www.huskyclub.com/tavpaintcolors.html Best regards , Jon - Espada S3 owner from Norway , europe.
Really ... From what I have observed on S1 and S2 cars they were placed in the front behind the grill. Perhaps they moved them on later S2 cars but I think what you're referring to are the S3 cars and many things were different on those. Your reference for color is simply a website. Belongs to a friend of mine but it's not the absolute last word on such things. There's no such thing. All we have are the observations of owners and then probably the best documentary evidence is photos from auto magazines from that time frame. With regard to the what the poster suggested about painting them black. I suspect that at some point in time the factory decided that they wanted to hide the horns. That's why mine are black in color from Fiamm and have no traces of any color other than the Fiamm badge on the end. Then to make them even less visible Lamborghini slopped paint on the red hose and on mine they even covered over the Fiamm badge and the chrome trim ring at the base of the horns. I highly doubt this was a customer requested special option. The effect wasn't terribly attractive because of how poorly it was execute. I originally thought it was done by the PO but then I saw other's painted this way in magazines from the early 1970s. Here are three examples all with blacked-out horns and you can even see one one of them where they missed some of the red hose. #8538 a later S2 #7260 S1 #7293 S1 (glass roof Espada") Mine is #7996 an early S2 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Gee it does make you understand how hard it is for show judges, and also for people that show cars. Pete
Exactly. Or trying to argue the point with a judge. Anyone claiming to know exactly what's correct is just kidding themselves. I only know what I've seen so far.
Hehe.. well I only have an S3 and that is the car I really know a little about. I do remember that I have seen S2 cars also with the horns in the engine bay too , but they were maybe late production. (also seen some cars which seems to be a mix of s2/s3 items... strange ! ) Anyway , best of luck with your cars , it is always interesting to follow the threads here. Jon , S3 "9462".
This really is pathetic now isn't it? Mine are currently off the car because in my attempts to clean up the slobbered on paint I damaged some of the chrome trim ring. It's chrome plated plastic and not metal like everything else on the horn. That's when I found the country/city horn pull down switch hidden under the dash. Mine was missing the screw on knob so it was even harder to find. So now my car goes beep . beep just like the roadrunner! http://www.wavsource.com/snds_2011-10-16_1858431574680040/tv/looney_tunes/roadrunner2.wav
Espada dudes ! Anthony Young , a writer for this publication asked for photos of freshly done Espadas last spring on VLG . So with that I submitted pics of mine . See pg numbered 97 and top of page numbered 100 in the attachment. I also recd a photo credit in the back of the issue! what fun Gary 8394 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Forgive my ignorance but could you tell me what VLG is and where I can find it. I have just finished my restoration and will be creating a website called espadaXYY151M soon and any historic information would be really helpful. Lynne
Hi Lynne It's the Vintage Lamborghini Garage, a group focusing on the older cars (emphasis on the 1960s and 1970s). it's easy to join, and there are some very knowledgeable owners who are happy to share information (just like here!). This is the homepage: http://www.vintagelamborghini.com/ And this is the forum: http://www.vintagelamborghini.com/vlgforum/ Enjoy! Jonathan
Well that's only part of the story. At this point the minority portion. It exists on two websites. The one just referenced in the previous post and also over in Yahoo Groups where the majority of the discussions ensue. Thus far most of the members are sticking with the Yahoo website and some are posting a bit on the alternative website which is more modern in appearance but lacking an organized information data storage capability (just like this website) for things like articles, spreadsheets and technical write ups. There are also people who post on here as well as VLG. The Doc, Phillipe, Peter K., myself and others. I can't list everyone ... There are quite a few heavy hitters in the Lamborghini universe who monitor and occasionally contribute on there. I suggest you hit Ferrarichat and VLG on Yahoo at a minimum if you want to reach everyone. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/VintageLambo
Darryl's (also on here and over on VLG) black Espada always shows well and those slats look great don't they? I saw that car back here in the 1990s when it had just come out of restoration with a previous owner. Gary, the guy who did the interior in that car swore he'd NEVER do another Espada after doing that S1 style dash. Last summer I was in contact with Bob Huber from out in LA who was fabricating a new version of those slats for a customer of his and he send quite a few photos of how he approached the re-creation of these with an alternative method of mounting the entire structure. Bob did other things on that car as well. Bob does very nice work. I'll see if I can get him to post it on here. I don't think he posted it here did he? What do fellow Espada owners think about a set of slats mounted on a series two car? Sacrilege?
Yes, that's my black S1 in the Automobile Quarterly article. Thanks for the kind words. As for the rear window slats, I produced CAD drawings of my original slats and provided them to Bob Huber for his use in fabricating the grill for Mike's white car. There are seven distinctly different fin profiles in the grill due to the slight curvature in the top of the window frame. Bob did a magnificent job in fabricating Mike's unit. As for making grills for other cars, I would have to admit to being somewhat negative. I did the drawings for Mike's car because I was told his Espada orginally had the grill. There were only a handful of cars built with the slats, so if guys start making them for later cars it starts to obscure history a bit and confuse the whole originality thing. Of course, the slats Bob made are not constructed in exactly the same manner (they are much, much better!) so there is little chance of being taken as original by someone who knows about the cars. If someone does make replica slats I suggest they do what Bob did and make them removable with quick release pins. My original slats are screwed to the bodywork, making it a nasty job to clean the rear window.
espada dudes ! Glad to know your all still alive and that it takes only one post to provoke conversation again. I was suffering from espada yak withdraw and Since my car is currently sitting at RM for Tranny syncros and other tidbits i am also having car withdrawl. That being said i would hat if all series 3 guys decided to make their cars into series 2s by redoing the dash. So i would have to add that if i owned a series one and suddenly someone was producing slats to sell to series 2 and even 3 guys it wouldn't make me happy as the series one is just that a smaller number series one with unique features. ho hum de dumb however. Imagine the cleaning nightmare and what it would look like when viewed from the drivers seat thru the rear-view mirror on a sunny day . I for one am glad i don't have the unique and unusual slats !..... but they are cool ! Ok Espada dudes lets hope its not another month before someone posts on here ok . Happy holidays gents Gary 8394
So I guess this one wouldn't be popular with you guys? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Your car must be one of the lasts with those rear slats. Only the approx. first 55 units (body numbers 750*0001 till 750*0055) had these slats. The S1 are the first 186 units with body numbers from 750*0001 till 750*0186 , most of them with the hexagonal dash.
Where is it, what is it, and how much? Most are popular with me. This possibly because it is an automatic.....makes it more "acceptable" to my wife. Everytime I buy a car she says "can I drive it" to which I reply "can you shift?" She'll reply "no......why do you got to buy anoher car blah blah blah...."
