Looking for a garage heater to keep me and prancing horse warm this winter. Wanted to go with natural gas but was told it had to be "direct vent" in New Jersey. I was told a heat pump with an inverter driven compressor was a better idea, more efficient (definitely much more expensive). Also wondering if a radiant heater is a good idea? I would not keep the garage warm all the time so I'd want to switch it on and get the room up to temp rapidly for a few hours a weekend and then shut it off for the rest of the week.

Currently choking on a kerosene "jet engine style" outdoor heater. Needs lots of fresh air for me and it and it eventually stinks up everything in the garage and basement. Wifey not too happy with it either.

What have you guys done and are you happy with the result?

Please, please be careful with heaters if you have any issues or doubts concerning fumes from your car.

I have an inexpensive in fared heater hanging from the ceiling that operates with a pull string. It's plugged into a programmable thermostat which shuts off at 45deg. When I play in there on the weekends in winter I simply bypass thermostat and it stays on! Ifared heats objects not air so you feel warm immediately upon entering . Btw is a double garage with 11 foot ceiling , 2 lifts and 4 cars ? I live just outside of Toronto so I'm an expert in cold!
It cost me 57 dollars for the heater and 40 for the programmable plug in thermostat the heater plugs into . It's safe because it's hanging in the air and even if it were to stay on no big deal. Cheapo solution to a big chilly problem and my old lamb never has to worry about cracks in the paint due to extremes of temp.

Also don't forget insulate the walls and add rubber pads on floor too ...

I'm running a Dayton electric heater in a well-insulated 625 sq. ft. garage w/ a 10' ceiling. I keep the temp at 45˚ all winter and hardly notice the electric bill...

    Gary,

Curious as to where you can pick up an infrared heater for $57. Thanks.

Not sure where you can get them for $57 but northern tool have then for $45 and sometimes on sale for $30. Item # 700093. I have two in my garage. They are a little flimsy but they heat the place safely.

If you don't mind sharing please tell me who is installing it and how much you are paying? I am building a townhouse in Morris Co and am interested in this.

    Thanks!

No risk of fume ignition with IR heaters?
