Now even the F1 drivers are donating items to the Wheldon auction to support the trust for his family.

Not trying to be cynical but I really don't get this. Can anybody comment on his financial situation? I have a hard time comprehending that a two times Indy winner doesn't have some serious cash in the bank.

If it is for his charity that's wonderful but on Speed they said it was to support the family.

    What am I missing?

I wondered that as well. Perhaps he took a leap of faith and financed his career ala Niki Lauda - he wasn't in a regular seat - and didn't have a lot to bequest?

LOL, you are comparing apples and oranges.

Back in the 60's you could put 'all you own' into racing because it didn't take as much. Plus you slept on the shop floor and did most of the work yourself.
You simply don't see that today, and you haven't for a long long time because now MONEY dictates who races, you either bring it with you or you don't race. It wasn't like that 45 years ago.

I'd be surprised if Wheldon had much more than a million bucks in the bank.

IIRC, Justin Wilson financed his F1 ride through outside "investors"...and still owes them money.

Didn't Jenson Button sell stock in himself? Or am I thinking of the Justin Wilson deal??
