I was told recently that the new F1 formula for 2012 calls for 1.6 liter four cylinder engines. Is this correct? What do you know about this? Irish
It's been talked about lots on here, try a search and you should find lots of info. They're also not coming in 2012 but got pushed to 2013.
That, and they're going to be 1.6 litre V6s, not inline 4s as originally proposed. Irish, whoever told you about the 2012 1.6 inline 4 engines got it almost all wrong (the displacement is right, though!) Find a new source for your F1 info!
+1 No compound compressors and a 15K (?) rev limit IIRC. Merc are already running theirs, and apparently it sounds good...... +1 Cheers, Ian
Thanks for the replies guys. So, they are also turbocharged, right? I have heard so much misinformation on this subject that I was not sure what to believe. V6 is good. But is it not true that the original plan was to use 4-bangers? and this got changed to V6? I am looking forward to seeing turbo cars in F1 again. Maybe some of it will trickle down to us. Any word on boost limits? I understand that there will be fuel flow restrictions which should also limit boost so the mixture remains at a safe limit. I can recall that some of the old 1.5 L turbos of the 80's were putting out in excess of 1000hp during qualifying and ran about 600-900 during the races. But I have no clue how much boost they ran to make that. My guess is 2-3 atmosphere? Irish
Dunno about the last point, but yeah, the original proposal was for turbo inline 4's. Many people (Bernie included ) suggested the noise may suck (or be non-existent) and it got changed to a V6. IIRC, this change also pushed their introduction from 2013 to 2014 (?) 2014 engine regs; Source; http://fia.com/en-GB/sport/regulations/Pages/FIAFormulaOneWorldChampionship.aspx They're pretty big PDF files but make for some interesting reading if you're that way inclined..... As for the BMW / Honda etc turbo era - Affectionately known as the "Kablamo period" heres a repost of a paper written by Dr Theissen that someone found a while back. Again, some interesting stuff if you're interested. Cheers, Ian Image Unavailable, Please Login
