I have a frustrating problem. Yesterday, I installed a four port powered USB hub on my laptop so that I could run all my peripherals without having to swap hook-ups all the time. All of the stuff that's connected to the hub works fine.

There's just one problem. Ever since I connected the hub, I get no sound from my computer from any source. The speakers are not muted and the little vertical sound indicator moves up and down as if there were sound, but nothing comes out of the speakers. I've tried doing a system restore twice. Both times the sound came back for a minute or so and then cut off. I'm using the built-in speakers, not external ones. I'm running Windows 7.

When I disconnect the hub, the sound comes back on, but that's not a satisfactory solution.

I use my computer for video editing, so having sound is essential to my work.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

After the restore and before installing the hub? Or the hub stayed installed during the restore? [If the latter, the newly restored version may be clobbering anything you added when installing the hub. (?)]

    Did it ever work?

Did you have to install any additional drivers (was an install CD used?) - I don't think it should be necessary these days with 7, but?

How comfortable are you poking in control panel -> System -> Devices? [Look for the existence of all those lovely ports and check for conflicts between them and the sound system?]

    Good luck,
    Cheers,
    Ian

    Thanks Ian.

The hub stayed connected during the restore.

The hub works fine, but the sound goes off when it's connected and comes right back on when it's unplugged.

    No install software was provided.

Before I do anything else, I've sent an email to the company's tech support to see what they say. At least I can still have sound, or use the hub; just not both at the same time. :)

That's f'ed up!..... Sure sounds like there's what we used to call a "resource conflict".

Have you tried Googling "device_model_# kills sound on your_computer" - Chances are someone's had the problem before.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

Check what the default sound device is when the hub is connected, the computer might think the hub is a mic/headphones and trying to send the sound to it. Right click on the sound icon and select default device.

That is interesting because one of the things connected to the hub is a USB output sound mixer. I will give that a try. Thanks!

Update: You nailed it Chris. The default sound device was shown as "Speakers 2 - USB Audio Device". When I plugged headphones into the mixer, I got sound! Since it has two outputs, I can connect a pair of powered speakers to the second one. Thank you!!!!
