Now that Austin is on the official FIA calendar, will the race really happen?

  1. Yes, it will happen.

  2. No, no way for construction to finish.

Now I just got to thinkin a 2013 USGP is not as far fetched as we may think??? There is no way in Haiti's that construction would have been restarted & considering its pace if a GP was not inevitable in the future.

I predict that the new Texas facility will be ready just in the nick of time and the F1 race will be a hugh hit. I know I will be there.

I'm with ya on that as there has got to be a reason the construction restarted so abruptly and at such a frantic pace.

That's what I've been saying for a while. You don't spend 100MM at least so far (plus Bernie's fee) without the ability to finish it out.

Making a trip out there this afternoon.

Is there an indication that COTA principals will
be making any official announcements or holding
a press conference any time soon?

They definitely need to make some sort of press release as it is apparent something has happened behind the scenes since construction restarted just as abruptly as it had stopped.

    A couple points...

COTA has a history of short burst of activity. With that said,... the current rate of work does appear orders of magnitude beyond any which preceded it. Someone is spending a lot of money...

However,... the complete absence of marketing / promotion can not be ignored. Why are tickets not available? Why would they (COTA) not be competing for race fans to sit in their seats?

As I've said before,... I'll believe COTA is targeting a 2012 race when they sell tickets.

A very interesting bit of data would be whether teams have made lodging arrangements in Austin for Nov 2012...

A buddy of mine has reservations at a hotel in Austin. The manager told him he HAD to confirm his room in mid December because that hotel just happened to be one of the main team hotel HQ.

I'm certain the teams have made their reservations. It would be foolish to NOT do so, when reservations can certainly be canceled if the race doesn't occur.

edit: I'm making my reservations *after* I have a ticket in hand. That timing helps with a reliance theory of recovery from COTA if needed ;)

I visited the site Friday on my way back from the Alamo Bowl. First, based on what I had read on this forum, I was surprised at how much I could see from the road. Next, I was surprised at how much was going on. It is hard to believe they can jam any more activity into the place. As far as traffic goes, highway 812 is wider than I expected and they should be able to restripe or cone it off to carry three lanes, although they would have to add pavement depth if the shoulders aren't now full depth or they will destroy them. If 812 is their only access, they can move a little more than 20,000 vehichles out in three hours. That won't get the job done. They have to get direct access to the toll road (45/130) to move any real numbers. That will not be available to them without major construction. Being a retired transportation planner, I couldn't help but work out a plan. It will be interesting to see what they do by comparison. I suggest that anyone attending next year's race bring food and a large book to read while waiting to leave, or a helicopter.

with the roads around there I was sort of expecting them to shuttle the bulk of the crowd in from some other parking location. sort of like what they do for the byron nelson in dfw.

At TWS they often had an infield concert or something after the race itself, to keep the party going and let traffic meter out.....I recall Los Lobos playing one year after Mad Max had thrashed the MOMO 333SP down the main straight, lap after lap.

When we were out at the course on Friday we didn't have a map that even showed 812. I just looked it up on Google maps. Does anyone know if COTA will be able to connect up with McAngus? If they can, it will help some, but ultimately most of this traffic will run back into the traffic from 812 and compete for space. Here's how it works, folks. A facility like 130/45 can carry as much as 2,500 cars per lane, per hour, or even more under perfect conditions. Perfect conditions means smooth, fast flow with little or no traffic coming onto the road at interchanges. If they feed traffic from the course into two interchanges it lowers that capacity because of the merges. So, if they can pump this traffic on from one spot into both directions, with 2 lanes each way, that means 10,000 vehicles per hour on 130/45. Then you can add the traffic from 812 and anything from McAngus, if they can use it. Per lane traffic on roads like these are less than on the freeway (130/45), possibly 1,800 or 1,900 per lane per hour under great conditions, but if that traffic doesn't have a good outlet, it eventually backs up and then capacity drops considerably. Once away from the course there are more roadways to then distribute cars onto, such as 71 and 183, but you have to get the cars to them first. Arrive early, leave late (or early).
