Ferrari F2012 contender rumors

Some technical bits are emerging here and there as well as the ever present rumor mill hard at work. The F2012 is reportedly flat-bottomed and the floor of the car is said to be 'genius' work from Byrne which changes a lot of everything else on the car. Meaning the concept and idea is very fresh and revolutionary but nothing can be tested until the season starts really. Wind tunnel and CFD only do so much. On paper though, what they have in the mill could be interesting.

Jonathan Neale to @ f1enigma confirms that Budkowski only took a sabbatical but will not go to Ferrari, McLaren again.


There seems to be some pretty detailed speculation here - could all be nonsense of course, I guess we'll see in a few months time.


Scarbs always interprets things to ideas from the past which I love.

Hah. Yeah Luca mentioned the other day that the Italians are having to recruit Brits for aero work as for some reason Italians are not as good at it. His words, not mine. As for the new Ferrari staff, I think they are a little late to the party compared to the top top tier of the sport. This will be a very interesting season for Ferrari which either be one of greatness or great sadness.

F2012 can either destroy the field with its innovative look or it could flounder for a while until Ferrari gets a grasp on this new technology they are experimenting with. There is always a chance with going with a 'revolutionary' design, yet those designs are always the most successful so definitely a chance worth taking these days. Mclaren really went for it '11 didn't they. Worked fairly well right.

 

They need to see how this new tech works on the field. I guarantee they won't solidify anything regarding the '13 car until they know two things. a) what everyone else is doing, b) how the new Ferrari tech is working

 

Rory is not really back. Word is that he is there to consult and assist in interpreting new rules. When anyone tries something 'new' and 'revolutionary' there is always great risk. Look at Renault '11, Mclaren '11, MB '11, and I know there are tons of other examples but these are the most fresh concepts in our minds of teams going outside of the box to do something different that will compete. So in other words, it better be an incredibly good 'thing' or 'magic bullet' they came up with or stuff will go bad quickly. I commend Ferrari for doing this though as it is the only way to beat Red Bull. I really hate teams that are trying to out-Newey a Newey design. F150 was a example of this. Won't happen.

 

The lower nose issue and shorter bulkhead issue is really going to force designers to get creative regarding airflow under the nose and around the sidepods. I suspect teams will make the top of the nose within spec yet do everything possibly to have as thin a nose as they are able a la Mercedes W02. This rule alone makes me wonder how RB will keep their trademark supersoft front suspension setup. Don't think it will happen. I'm guessing there will be some pullrod front suspensions on the field.

 

It's a smart move. All teams do it, and the team with the best offer (not always $$) wins. Dede went all-in with RB and cashed in big time that past couple seasons and those are all Williams and Mclaren guys running that team. It took time to cook but things sure did turn out nicely didn't they. Seeing these changes at Ferrari reminds me of what MB decided to do 6 months ago which in-turn tells me that 2013 and 2014 will be amazing seasons with all these championship quality teams, if not sooner.

 

Ferrari apparently have their own ride height system which they are waiting for Chuck to approve. Will '12 be a season relying on who can figure out how to setup this new technology best? Ferrari hired a tire guy from Bridgestone to help so we'll see.
