Calling Porsche experts: 964 Speedster

Is this an official model? If so, which markets was it sold it? What are the asking prices for it?
Most gorgeous Porsche 911 I've seen in my life.

they were available in usa when new. i dont think their value is as high as the previous 911 version. i still like them though

 

Most (if not all) of the US 964 Speedsters are in narrow body configuration. This one is a wide body.

 

I sold these at the dealer when they were new, factory ordered several for clients, and have resold many over the years as used examples.

AFAIK all units sold worldwide are narrow body units.

None have the 3.6 Turbo Speedline wheels as pictured here, nor do any have turbo fender flares, or the red brake calipers from the factory.

Of course, this does not mean that someone (like Jerry Seinfeld for example) paid Porsche Exclusiv a small fortune to make one or add those kind of things, and somehow the records slipped thru the cracks in the last 16 years, but I highly doubt it. I requested that a couple of cars be modified by Porsche Exclusiv for my buyers, but those modifications took months, and were all interior related or paint to sample, and documented accordingly on the build stickers and other factory paperwork. Authenticity is easy to verify on a 964.

What you've got here is someone who went ahead and built something that they always wanted IMHO.

FWIW the creator of the linked site appears to be one of my former clients who lives in Portland, Oregon and owns the 3 red Speedsters pictured (I've been to his house in that photo and driven them), and some of the photos on his site are mine as well, as I gave them to him years ago. The Speed Yellow car I sold new, and it still resides here in Calgary with an F-Chatter (those pics were taken outside of my old showroom).....and FWIW, the black and white cars pictured I sold for the site creator on his behalf back in 2006/07.........

To get correct production run numbers from Porsche is sometimes not that easy... so a lot of information still is based on different sources.

But it's true that you could order the 964 Speedster as WTL (Werks-Turbo-Look). It's said that from the approx. 930 built Speedsters around 10-15 were WTL. The number isn't proofed but there are defenitely original ones existing, btw. without bearing WTL option code.

You are correct about 'Exclusive': Exclusive (formerly known as 'Sonderwunsch-Programm') did specials that differ from the production run as long as it was possible and the customers pockets were deep enough. But they also built some 'ranges' as e.g. the 964 Turbo 3.6 Flachbau. And so the Speedster WTL.

~16 from the ~930 pcs. were Tiptronic, ~14 were RHD

The list price of the 964 Speedster was less then the Carrera 2 Cabriolet (!), the weight wasn't, because what they lost in the interior/equipment they won back with stiffening.

The RS seats were serial equipment, like the RS door panels etc. and normally all colour coded, 'normal' Comfort seats could be ordered as an extra (without extra costs).

There was an "America Roadster" that was as far as I can tell a speedster with a wide body. It should say "Roadster" on the back if it's not debadged.

I'm looking at a 1993 "salesman handbook" now, and the base price before options for a Carrara 2 Cabriolet was $74,190. The base price before options of the America Roadster was $89,350.

Here is an old ad with pictures- there was a time you could get these relatively cheap especially with a tiptronic, but I think that time has passed as people realize how good looking these cars are and the classic porsche experience they give:

The America Roadster (the US designation) was an actual C2 cabrio with a turbo look body, turbo suspension, full leather turbo interior and 17" CUP wheels.

FWIW in Canada they were badged "Carrera 2" and sold as the "C2 turbo look cabriolet"............

I love 964 so much, the whole line is so classy, timeless, pure and complete!

 

I was never a fan of the 911 speedster but this one DOES look stunning.

FWIW Canepa has the silver/dark blue car available and Mohlman has the one-off granite green/green (olive) car available.

As already explained: The America Roadster was no Speedster.
The America Roadster was a 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet WTL (Werks-Turbo-Look).

Chassis and brakes came from the 964 Turbo.

There were 1,532 964 Carrera 2 Turbo-Look built, from which 326 were America Roadster (MJ92-94).

6 of the 1,532 were 'real' 964 Turbo Cabriolet.

So compared to the 409 US & Canada Speedsters (+521 ROW = 930) the America Roadster is a little rarer. And it was much more expensive.

Price list Germany MJ93 08/92 (in 'Deutsche Mark': 1$ ~ 1.56 DM - just to get an idea):

Carrera 2 Cabriolet: DM 138,740 ~ $ 88,935
Carrera 2 Speedster: DM 131,500 ~ $ 84,294
Carrera 2 Cabriolet Turbo Look: DM 173,870 ~ $ 111.455

 

BTW:

The first 964 Speedster prototype was already built in 1990 (the production model was then built 1993 (MJ 1994)) and it was a Turbo-Look model (in the colour Viola)!

Did you ever end up getting the speedster? I'm really thinking about getting a 964 speedster back in Australia to keep for my trips back there. I love the 911 speedsters to death. It's on my bucket list. Sadly none are left in Singapore.

 

I too agree. And much more collectible too. I've sold many 911's but the guards red 89 speedster I sold in 2001 was by far the coolest

As Keith said I highly doubt the 964 ever came in wide body. But the car originally posted here still looks great. Love the speedlines!

I've noticed a white one for sale locally.

 

Ive loves the style of these for awhile as well, Ive actually seen a few on eBay, not sure if they were factory builds or aftermarket mods, but very very cool looking cars.

 

I'd love to find a red 89 speedster to match my 55 speedster. Still my favorite cars of all times. I can't get enough "rare air"
