They have the Aventador right now. Will drive it late February when I am down there for business.

I ordered my MP4 last year. I was expecting delivery this March / April --- as that is what I was told all along by them (McLaren --- I'm not going through a dealer). However, as of about 3 weeks ago, I have been informed that my delivery will be delayed --- by 2-3 months.

That does not bother me at all. I've wanted an MP4 since it began its development stage long ago, so a few extra months is no big deal to wait. I believe they are doing the right thing by dialing back the production timelines --- they want to get it as right as possible --- and, they have had to adjust due to the typical bugs that come up when you try to roll out a new car / new organization simultaneously.

And, yes, for people who wish to place an order now ---- the delivery schedule is way far out there currently.

Also, it my understanding that all the cars that will be arriving at US Dealerships over the next several months or so, are "pre-sold" ---- so, although the Dealers may allow them to be "on display" in their showrooms for a short time before they are delivered to customers, they are not available for sale (i.e., they have already been sold before they arrive at the Dealers).

Unless you're referring to a 1974 Range Rover, I don't think that's an accurate assessment. My 458 skyrocketed in options too. All of these types of manufacturers are the same. Mind you, if the 458 was more expensive the choice would still be easy for me. Very easy.

One thing that will make a difference, though, is the drop in the euro against the pound. The McLaren won't benefit from that.

I find this a statement with rose tinted glasses on - which is fine, by the way. They should get it right first time period, not as right as possible. Their mistake was to release cars for testing far, far, before the production line was ready. They let people drive in them in February or March next to Button/Hamilton. Then there would be reviews (Top Gear springs to mind). Then it was postponed. Postponed again. Then the reviews came. 458 won every one. So Top Gear test was postponed again. Did great at Top Gear. Then the production cars were postponed. Then they trickled out but some were sent back by clients and a lot had lots of issues.

All in all, it is a real shame that management didn't just bite the bullet first time around and just postponed everything to October or whenever the cars were really ready. It would have relieved the pressure, not given the bad press, trying to deal with fall out & worried customers & cancellations, and most of all very unhappy first customers after delivery.

The car got off to a bad start due to overpromising on delivery dates and release to the public before it was ready. But I am sure that they will get it right in the end, McLaren are nothing if not tenacious and brilliant engineers. And I am sure you'll enjoy the car. As I will my 458. Happy motoring!

    Don't believe the hype.

I called an indep dealer and their bid on a brand new car was 17k under list. They already had one unsold car. There are customers out there who have ordered cars and don't want them. I don't think it's an over list car in the uk.

Well, so far, no MP4's have caught on fire ---- you have to give them that, at least ;).

Other than those poor blokes with their steering wheels mounted on the wrong side, who the hell drives in the rain ?! - LOL :)

That's just so the gub-ment can track you 24/7

Besides, the MP4's "non-functioning GPS" is actually an intentional, top secret, cover for the car's on-board stealth technology --- this feature was never disclosed to the public or to the car mags........only those whose deposits were taken were informed.... it's real "hush, hush", insider stuff ;):)

    LOL :)

a few of the high-end auto rental shops in Beverly Hills somehow get exotics very early on... i'm pretty sure one of the first 458s in LA was at one of these shops. Don't read a lot into the fact they have one other than they get cars like that on a regular basis and the #s must pencil out business-wise. Stands to reason that if they consistenly order these cars from the local dealers they get the same sort of priority ordering as other ferrari (and other makes) owners who buy new cars over the years.

And, we have yet another......for all you "McLaren haters" out there to consider....

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=351530

Probably costs a bit more than a door lock to fix :p

...but, most 458's will be traded away / off-lease long before they hit 35K miles, anyway.....so it likely doesn't matter.

BTW, Ferrari has not understood how to make a reliable exhaust system (on their mid-engine cars) since the 355 ---- and, they show no signs that their engineering has improved in that regard.

First, please find the "mac hater" post in this thread. I think someone here lit a fuse and doesn't like that the bomb went off in his hand. :)

Second, at least Fchat doesn't mind people posting problems with their cars. Your Mac friends site bans people even if you QUESTION if something may be wrong. Then again there's like 5 guys who actually post on it so it's easy to kick someone off.

Mac has shipped maybe, what....100 cars so far? Get back to us in 10 years when the 5th owner has to rebuild the hydraulic suspension for 80 grand.

Well the 458 needs doors that open and a working GPS so road side assistance can find you by the side of the road and you can get out when the transmission fails and leaves you stranded ! :) :)

I understand Mclaren have delivered over 500 cars so far (worldwide) not much compared to the amount Ferrari have done of course but credit where its due, this is a game change in the sense that now Ferrari have a real challenger in the market, and i for one welcome it.

I'm not sure why whenever the Mac comes up, the Mac lovers come out in droves to antagonize people here.

No one said they didn't like the 12-c. No one said it wasn't good that McLaren are now in the market. A lot of F car owners would like to drive it when it becomes available (me included).

A future Mac owner made some rather discouraging remarks (he says it was a joke) about the 458 and we jokingly responded. Let's just leave it at that before this thread goes down hill like every other with the Mac.

Why would McLaren put a hydraulic suspension on a street car anyway? Hydraulics always seem to fail on the Formula 1 cars. McLaren was clever about reducing the vehicle weight but the 458 MAG ride responds to sharp direction changes much better even though it's a heavier vehicle.

For the same reason all the luxury car makers put 600 bhp and super-aerodinamics: because it´s cool and you can charge a lot of money for that.

As a former Scud and 458 owner, I just picked up my Mclaren a few weeks ago. While not as pretty as the 458 it may be the most exciting car to drive ever. It is so fast that my wife now refuses to go in the car. The turbos kick so hard and smooth it is almost unbelievable, feels like a video game. I do feel if ferrari builds the 458 Scud variant properly it will rival the driving excitment of the Mclaren. Btw I loved my 458 just not exciting/raw enough for my taste. The Mclaren today fills a void in this market that Ferrari has left behind, however once the next Scud arrives this may change. I for one will buy one IF they build it.

Sounds great! The 458 gearbox software has been changed in 2012 to be more "raw". I think Maranello heard that complaint before and are trying to react to it.

Do you like the sound it makes? Did you get the standard exhaust?

You must be one of the first in LA to get one. I want to drive one when they get to the track in Vegas. Congratulations!

A million posts and magazine tests on the McLaren and Kevin is the only person to ever say how exciting the car is compared to the 458 and scud. Hmmm
