    Just sold at $ 275

One of the better looking cars on the stage today IMO.

it has sold for $275k, biding started at 100k was slow to grow! But the bidding just keep going. if i thought it would go for this kind of price I would have registered.. Maserati's even one offs always seem to be a hard sell at auction. This is of course this was less than the estimate.

Actually if you add in the buyer's premium of 10% it is right at low estimate.

I have not seen this black Vignale in a few years but I feel someone got a decent buy at that price. Same for the Frua 3500GT, which I saw last year at Amelia.

    :) What's the quote? Something about 20-20? :)

Frank how did the car drive at the time of your ownership?

It drove pretty much like all early 3500 GT's. A 4 head light car Mr. Frua did a nice job with it. When I owned it, it had the wrong rear glass and taillights and was rusty as i recall. I think I sold it for $30,000 bucks or so. At one time I owned 5 or 6 Frua cars.

1457 is a pretty nice car, but not spectacular. I would have thought it would have brought something closer to $350,000.

This was the car that erupted into some litigation between Lord Brocket and myself with our UK barristers prevailing in a $30,000 judgement in my favor. But as we all know having a judgment in hand and collecting are two different things. Seemed the good Lord operated out of an account in the Channel Islands which when our crack legal team investigated found only 2,000 Pounds Sterling sitting there. Hardly worth attaching. So the Judgement went unpaid. Sweet Justus did shine down when his Lordship subsequently pleaded guilty to insurance fraud surrounding the theft of some Maserati and Ferrari racing cars. He cut them up and buried them on the Brocket Hall estate.

He did 3 years in the joint and ended up getting married to the guy with the most cigarettes.

Agreed on your assessment of the condition of #1457. Also $350,000 is what I would have expected for this car at auction.

Luckily the lord did not have the time to cut and bury all his cars as I was able to get #1457 when what was left got liquidated. I think I paid the equivalent of $50,000 (there was a trade involved) and the car had its hard top at the time.

I believe there was just one other Frua 3500gt made and it had square headlights and a very distinct small Maserati trident at the upper corner of the C pillar. It's currently dark red....

According to the excellent Frua website (www.pietro-frua.de/italsuisse/1961_maserati3500.htm), four cars were made: 1494, 1496, 2200 and 2242.
