I would put Walter Rohrl in the pantheon of greats. He was incredible in rally and road racing - I have no doubt if given the chance, he'd have been a success in any other series.

I saw some videos of him back in the day with his footwork, and it was awesome to watch.

Clarkson wouldn't stand a chance...

Two-time World Champion Rohrl has made a career as a racing driver. Clarkson is a journalist and entertainer who powerslides cars on massive airstrips. Big difference.

I'm one of the few who actually is a fan of Clarkson, but this comment of yours is way off base.

Yes he can power slide but he is anything but a professional racing driver (he is no faster than his team mates when it comes to lap times) which Rohl was. Thus your post is somewhat insulting to Walter Rohl who has the trophies ...

And yes Walter Rohl in my Toyota Tarago (Previa) would probably lap quicker around the ring than Clarkson in an Enzo FXX.

What driving experience !!! Clarkson is an opinionated average motoring journo who struck lucky. But Walter rohl is probably one of the most experienced sportscar drivers at the ring, so I think he would win very easily.

 

Actually Clarkson is one of the creators of the program ... so I wouldn't say he struck lucky. Credit where credit is due for coming up with the idea and getting the BBC to agree to fund it!

Driver choices aside, I think the 430 Scuderia would actually be faster around the 'Ring than the GTO despite the >160 HP difference between the two. The GTO weighs too much (more than 1600 kg fully wet, IIRC)

Of course, I could be wrong, but generally a lower weight is better than piling on the power.

No he is not, Top Gear had been going for many years prior to Clarkson joining it. Although he may well have brought some of its current laddish style to it. His great mate Andy Wilman is probably as much responsible for its success.

Rohrl would beat Clarkson on a skateboard

 

Rohrl could walk that track faster than Jezza could ever drive it -- no matter the vehicle.

There are lots of Rohrl Ring stories around, stories whose impact soars when you realize that the more insane they sound the greater the likelihood that they're at least 99% true. One of my favorites involves a stunt he pulled at the Ring's Karussel while taking a journalist around the Green Hell in an early 911.

Rohrl is one of the very few who not only possesses that sixth sense that we all long for, but who also, amazingly, has the ability to completely and utterly disregard its warnings at random and frivolous whim.

 

Nobody watched the the Pebble Mill version, so as far as I am concerned Jeremy and Andy created Top Gear.

i see what both of you mean ....TP was on-air when jezza was just coming up in BBC, so technically he didn't create the original program, but i agree he certainly did "re-invent" TP

 

No offence, but the comparison doesn't make sense. One is a pro, a champion, one more is an entertainer, who dislikes flappy gearbox.

A very strange comparison to make. JC does not tout himself as a racing driver, he often admits he is not all that good on the track. He doesnt even pretend or claim to be good.
