Here is a better pic of the offending unit. As Ive indicated I don't know enough to pass judgment one way or another. If anyone can help, please do.

Charles this looks like an interesting car as Left Coast Classics? The ex-Brumos one pictured in this thread?

Thats the one Joe! My Dad had an 87 930 Turbo that was black on "crimson red" (not cancan red). When that ad came out I had copies of it in the garage and on my wall. Love it! Thanks for post it.

I believe if you were on Porsche's customer list you received a poster with your name on the license plate.

They sent me one of a 944 Turbo with my name on the license plate. But neither my Dad nor I got one of the 911 Turbo with our name on it...oh well.

I've only recall seeing pix of the bottom 2 choices (which would have been my choice if going with fabric back then). Any idea what the fabric was made of cotton, wool, a blend, synthetic?

We have all 3 (Mc Laughlan, Black Watch & Dress Mc Kenzie) posted in this thread.

Black Watch is my favorite by far, Mc Laughlan is a bit too much. Also I much prefer ONLY the seat inserts done rather than the door panels too (overkill). Black Watch was used in some of the race cars as favored by the competition department.

To my hand it feels as if it is fairly heavy, wool is definitely a component, but its not synthetic and I know this because its cool in the summer and warm in the winter (if you know what I mean).

The material is almost impossible to get and I've found a source, but they want $317 per square meter!

Anyhow here is a closeup of Black Watch (albeit from the seat of a 935 works car) that hopefully shows the texture of the fabric.

"Here's the story on that car.

During the early 70's through the 80's, my dad's best friend was a man named Kurt Meier, Kurt worked for Porsche as the head of compliance. In other words, he was responsible for making sure that cars entering the USA would meet Federal and State requirements. Kurt quickly became a great friend and during the mid-70's he asked if I would be willing drive EPA test cars from Ann Arbor MI, and or Denver CO back to California. My job allowed me to trade days off and about once or twice a month, I'd fly to Ann Arbor or Denver and drive home a Porsche. I would then do a write up, and get to keep the car until my next trip and get paid. Sweet deal back then.

I brought back the car in this ad, originally, it had tartan interior and no passenger side mirror. This car has been advertised in the PCA "mart" for some time and when I saw it, I called the owner and we had a long chat. The first thing I mentioned to him was that the car had the wrong interior, he replied by telling me that he still had all of the Tartan interior and sent me a photo.

Kurt sold this car to Bob Smith of Bob Smith Porsche/VW in the San Fernando Valley, the current owner, I believe bought it from the person that bought if from Bob Smith.

Both my dad and Kurt are no long with us, my dad died in 1993 and Kurt in 2004.

This is the real deal and the documentation matches up. I assisted the owner with facts about this car when he published an article in possibly Excellence?

Here's a photo of me standing next to that car in 1976.

And yes, it was the first legal turbo in the country.

sorry about the quality of the photo but it's almost 32 years old and it has probably held up better than me.

In addition, the 1976 coin that came with the Porsche calendar was that of a 930 Turbo. My dad, a former coin dealer had an artist paint the coin to match that car. I still have that coin. "

    I try.

I really think of all significant sports cars out there, the early 930s have received the least respect and their time is nigh. Remember, this was Porsches first road-going Supercar.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for the info and photo showing the texture of the fabric used for interiors. I can see that it would probably hold a person in place a little better than leather, especially back in the 1970s (as I don't remember people actually using seatbelts when I was growing up). I agree it looks best when its just the seats and not the door panels. $317 per square meter is an eye watering amount for fabric!

Great story about the 1st US 930, thanks for sharing it with us.

i would tend to agree on the respect and Porsche's first mass produced super car. Would you however consider the 904 being Porsche's 1st road going supercar? granted there were only limited numbers built for the street, but it was the top dog at Porsche in it's day.

The 904 is great car! Even with distinct road cars there weren't many made. I wonder if we can consider it Porsche's 1st road going super car? I think something to consider is the differences between road car and racing car were not as distinct as they became by the very late 1960s early 1970s. I still think of the 904 a mix of race car/road car, maybe like a Ferrari's race/road cars. We always hear stories of back in the day "gentleman racers" driving their Ferraris to the track, racing and then driving them home. Later on, with dramatic differences between racing and road cars it wasn't really possible...think 917 or Ferrari 512M. I'm curious to hear Joe's thoughts on th 904.

The 904 was conceived as a competition car. The 930 on the other hand was conceived as a road car.

Interestingly, even the prototype 930 had appointments that clarified its road use. See sunroof...

Nice looking car, but thats not a 3.0 Turbo Carrera. That's a later 3.3 930 Turbo based on the spoiler that houses an intercooler. Also from the look of the rear window in the top photo (high mounted 3rd brake light), Euro style headlamps and flush headlamp washers this looks like an 87-89 3.3 Turbo.

Indeed, awesome car in our favorite Grand Prix White, but a later variant.

Another of Bill's one-owner 600k+-mile 1976 3.0 Turbo Carrera, pic by BR Murphy. That's about one million kilometers!

Again, awesome classic livery. Again, not a 3.0 Turbo Carrera. The most distinguishing feature of a 3.0 car is its tail, as in this Bob Smith-delivered California example.
