Wanted to know from 458 Challenge owners about the reliability and durability of Getrag DCT boxes?

Getrag claims that their wet clutch system will have a very long life at least 100K miles and can take the punishment of "performance" starts and driving.

But is this really the case?

Not a 458C owner, but willl buy one eventually. Have been warned off the 2011s, but wonder whether that's at all fair. Heard from a west coast Ferrari mechanic something about incompatible fluids causing problems that have now been fixed - and I probably have that wrong.

    So, yes, I'm curious, too.

Edit - what I heard is that problems were created by assembly lubricants not compatible with the fluid in the box. Not my theory!

Interesting! I've got a Cali which has a very similar ir not identical box as the 458. I'm on my third DCT box. But I am sure Getrag will fix the bugs and improve the box.

(I'm not a crazy WOT guy either.)

I had heard there was wire that broke inside the transmission that only allowed you every other gear. Not sure if this is so or just another rumor. Did hear it from a ferrari Mechanic at Cavalino. I did get to drive the 458 challenge at Cavlalino it was an amazing machine!

GGamble is right, only main concern is electrical failures. So far the Mechanicals have been reliable. Its still too early to see about long term clutch wear

I had a problem where it would only use one side of the box- so maybe that was the electrical problem you mentioned.

But what caused this? Heat? Or a short circuit due to conductivity of fluids?

Its mainly caused by poor wire routing inside the gearbox, the wires chaff on the inside of the case, moving gears, and there is poor insulation from the fluid it is immersed in. It's too bad because it really is a good gear box and when they get a permanent fix for the wiring issues it will be a very reliable box. It seems no Ferrari has a gear box that doesnt come without its quirks

We ran an entire season in Challenge without out one "real" failure, couple of codes, and a couple of mandatory "swaps" as required by FNA, but nothing that left the car stranded, or nothing to cause any DNFs. Others have had issues, but as far as I am told, the issues seem to be resolved........

Late 2011 production 458C -- No issues whatsoever, but upgraded to the 3rd gen gearbox last week as prescribed by FNA

Good to hear that problems seem to be resolved. Mine is coming in April 2012.
