    Here's my current stressor. My 2000 996 C2 has been great to me. It doesn't burn oil, no leaks, nada. I change the oil every 3000 miles, cut the filter with nothing present, and I have a magnetic drain plug that's always clean. I'm at 60,000 miles today and I've reached a crossroads. I plan on keeping the car as long as possible and I don't skimp out on service. The one issue is the biggie, IMS/RMS worry. I constantly worry about the what ifs if the big bang were to happen. I just got a quote for putting the LN Engineering kit in and a clutch job (if needed) and it was right at $4000. My dilema is do I put that much money into a car that has given me no issues. On a public servant's salary, I just can't decide if that much money is worth peace of mind.

    Am I crazy to do it or crazy not to do it and have peace of mind? I'm just looking for some other thoughts. Thanks!

    Do this & drive on happy.

    I have two M96 engine Porsche's (one with a replacement engine (blew at 50,100 miles), the other with 105,000 carefree miles), if you get to your kind of miles the chances of you having a IMS failure is quite reduced.

    I considered the Guardian, but I plan on keeping the car for some time. I would rather bite the bullet and fix the potential problem vs. have a system that costs $400 that tells you that you should have bitten the bullet and you have to pay up anyway!

    I just kills me because I don't know if I'm giving in to doomed 996 hype or being smart and proactive.......... :(

    I, like you, have a '99 996 C2 with 60,000 miles. I'd do it for the peace of mind.

    I just did a transmission rebuild, IMS/RMS, AOS and clutch for $5,400 total, so I'd say the $4,000 quote is a little high just for IMS/RMS and clutch.

    Is that quote from a Porsche dealer or from an independent mechanic?

    Feel free to shoot me a PM and I can go get the paperwork with the exact breakdown on what the IMS/RMS/Clutch costed.

    If you're planning on keeping the car for a long time I think the IMS is worth it. Say you keep it 5 more years. If you average the $4K out, it's $800 a year. Worth it for peace of mind? I say yes. A $15K engine replacement would not be fun as its worth almost as much as the car itself.

    besides, IIRC most RMS/IMS problems present themselves before 60k miles, so at this point you're likely in the clear.

    I just found one of my old Excellence issues that did an article on the Guardian. Like you've said, higher mileage cars have usually sorted out the IMS/RMS issue. Hopefully I would never need it and the Guardian might be the better option. I'll have to read up and check install costs.

    I love the aero kit sides on your car as well as the tint & wheels. Do you know what % tint that is?

    I wouldn't mess with it, it's been a good car for you thus far, I'd just enjoy it and not bother with the IMS. I have a 98 Boxster with 60k miles for 8.5 yrs now and I don't worry about that much at all. I mean, if we really knew what % actually failed, I think you'd be surprised at how low that percentage really is. That's just my two cents though.

    I don't, but I'll see if I a neighboring agency has a tint meter.
