this is great, though I can respect the owners choice on this, I wish we knew the prices of the different jobs for some relevant info, as so much is being done here.

Its pretty obvious its not about the money for Erik, I really think this car will be better then when it came out of the factory in many ways. Good for you Erik, Maybe you can take the car on a tour across the country so we can all see it in person. LOL

TexFerrari - I can give you some numbers, but I'm also coming off from another similar (not nearly as bad) service with my first Mondial. I assume Bradan is working with me to be reasonable. That being said, I can easily say that 348's have sold for less than I am paying for the service/mechanical restoration.

captglen - Glenn - will do, if I have the time! I love driving, usually try to instead of flying if I can. Agreed, the money I'm spending in the grand scheme of life is nothing. Compared to what other's spend for Enzo/F40/etc, I'm sure it is nothing.

    ---

All I can say is this is going to be nothing compared to what they are going to do for the 355 I picked up - :)

    I'm 31 - still haven't grown up myself!

This is what happens when you have an obsession from a very early age.

The 30's are fun! I'm 32. Already owned my share of exotics probably because the first car poster I remember having was that of a 1987 Ferrari F40 when I was a kid. Obsessions do start young.

Are the heat shields no longer needed after ceramic coating?

    Erik,
Observation... just out of curiosity, no intention of insulting anyone involved here... but please tell me they are going to refinish that engine cradle before this all goes back together??
The fact that this motor has been torn down and reassembled, and now appears to be remounted to that filthy cradle, scares the crap outta me!!

The car was in really rough shape when they got it - whatever they were able to do to clean it is good enough for me. I don't want a perfect car - going to drive the @$@#$ out of it!

Guys I can speak a little about this as I have experienced this first hand, see here:

Since 2008 I have replaced 2 alternators, the first failed at the end of summer 2009 and the second failed in June 2011 at a local track day event... mind you mine uses the older Delco alternator that is more prone to failing than your Nippondenso... since the second failure, I have since made a custom heat shield to protect the alternator from direct heat exposure from the headers and I went the rest of 2011 without issue. I convinced myself these failures were heat related but I have no hard data to back that up. I have since purchased headers intact with the shielding and they will be going back on should another failure occur.

Point that I'm trying to make is that NOW is the time to make heat shields with the engine out of the car. They don't have to be pretty to be effective and even Fabspeed include heat shields with their replacement headers for the 355 so they must be worried about heat-related issues.

We still wrap the last runners closest to the A/C compressor and Alternators with heat wrap. The coating used is designed for turbo cars that have EGT temps of over 1,500 degrees.
