Anybody have any idea why VDOT threw down salt and sand for the flurries a couple of days ago? Do they need to use their annual allottment or risk losing budget or something? Not a single flake stuck to the roads. It never got below freezing. I never lost sight of my grass through the quarter inch of precip. Why the hell is my ferrari now stuck in the garage for the next month until the roads are clean? Does that seem right to you?

They know your car is for sale and wanted to help you get the most for it by keeping the miles low.

I saw PennDot dumping salt on a mid 50 degree day about a month ago. There was no freezing temperatures in the forecast for at least a week. They need to use so much so they can get it in the budget for next year so snow or not they are going to dump tons of this crap on our roads every year no matter what.

Who cares that it destroys the roads, cars that drive on them and even screws up your well water if you do not have public water.

PennDot WASTE more of our tax dollars than you could ever believe. There should be a law.

Apparently it is not just here in Pa that this happens.

damn I wanna drive my car..

Do you all think it's safe to drive the car as long as after the drive you spray the bottom and wheel wells?

No, dont do it. VDOT put a lot of salt down, route 7 exits are horrible! I would wait a little longer for the roads to get better. This last rain/snow we got this AM just stirred it back up!

I just dont think its worth getting the engine bay coated with salt. I baby my car but I'm afraid mine is in hibernation till April :(

They couldn't wait either. The day they did it, I had a major all-dayer, left the house at 4:45 and they were already idling under overpasses though not a flake was scheduled to fall for more than 12 more hours.

Such a nice day... I'm going out, anyone want to meet up for a run? The salt isn't that bad, it's all dry, can't be any worse than our European guys or the salt flats for that matter.

They salted more last night, now it is even worse. Just be aware that the high winds today could blow the salt on the sides of the roads into the roadway :(The roads are dry and I suppose a thorough wash next week when the temps rise running the car is no big deal.

Have fun and enjoy but mine will stay in the garage under a cover for now, besides I am working today.. Which weapon are you taking out today, F430 or 599 :D

The roads are pure white here in Pa. I thought the street out in front of our house was snow covered at first.

Winter has finally arrived in Southern MD. They treated the roads here for the 1st time this year. Cant complain, last year my last driving day was around thanksgiving. I guess time to put the cars up now :) For a month

I have to agree. We have really had a very mild winter. I remember a few weeks ago I was wearing shorts outside mid winter! In years past I would have my car parked for months due to snow, salt, sand, potholes etc.., this year maybe 1 month parked, I am cool with that :). Hey I am thrilled the roads have remained in decent shape, not too many potholes that I have seen.

They salt the way they do, because past storms have brought more than predicted and they got flack for not salting and sanding well enough. They are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Give them a break, they give up weekend time with the family to try to keep our roads as safe as possible for your family.

I appreciate the alternate POV for attitude of gratitude, but I think it's a bit much to paint it as voluntary public service. These people giving up time with their families are probably VDOT workers with seniority signing up early for the double overtime.

Even if they're paid time and a half or double time, it's an important public service. Throw on top of that the impossibility of 100% accurate weather forecasts, and it's easy to see that it's not an easy task in any case.

By the way, I hate salt and sand as much as anyone!

Giving up time with their families strongly suggests, don't you think?

Sure there was overtime this weekend, but there is also danger pay for the guys in Afghanistan right now, does that remove the fact that they are sacrifising something for the greater good? You won't be able to use your toy for a few weeks because you don't want it to get dirty, so can't feel that much simpathy. And by the way, I saw a 360 going up Wilson Blvd. yesterday, so at least someone around here realizes that modern Fcars have pretty decent rust proofing and are meant to be driven. No way would I have taken the gt4 out though.

I'm not sure why you take this so seriously, Dennis. I can't. But at this point, since I don't wish to seem unpatriotic, I concede and further, promise to buy a beer for the next VDOT worker I see at the airport.

I was actually out Saturday night in MD and came home around 4am through DC while it was still pretty crappy out. MD hadn't done anything and I was sliding all over the place. Once I crossed the border into DC it was fine though since they had put out plenty of salt/sand to clear up the ice patches. I'm not a fan of sand but it'll wash off a lot easier than a telephone pole through the bumper.
