Air Travel in Australia

Looking to fly from Sydney to Newcastle round trip.

Any options other than Quantas?

I looked at Jetstar but they only showed going through Newcastle to
further destinations.

Hire a nice car and drive, it's only about 2 hours, mainly freeway too

 

X2..it would probably take you longer to fly than to drive,when you take into consideration going to and from the airports and checking in time..

 

X3 - even with the speeding fines its liable to be cheaper LOL ;-)

Totally agree with the others - hire a car - the freeway from Sydney to Newcastle is good and you will also have your own transport in Newcastle. Sydney Airport can be a pain and you would probably be flying in a little prop job anyway (you know, bi-plane, leather head gear, scarf)

 

Or take the train for a nice ride - the countryside around the Hawkesbury River is magnificent and with your surname, might be significant... Not sure how long it takes these days but probably not much longer than the driving time if you get an express.
The majority of Australians never consider any option other than car for trips under 4 hours...

As all the others have said its not worth flying to Newcastle if you have the option of driving, as the time taken mucking around at the airport, ie arrival, checking in, waiting in the lounge and catching a bus to the plane on the tarmac (No aerobridges for turboprops) will mean the trip takes a tad longer then actually driving there.

If you were to fly then Rex (Regional Express) is the only decent alternative to Qantas in flying to Regional cities here in NSW. They operate in a space between the Domestic Jets and small time operators like Aero Pelican with their much smaller planes . Many of my Family and I myself fly them regularly and their Saab 340's Turbo props are a noisier and more involving experience than the larger rival jets and their staff are on average a lot more friendly, understanding and willing to go the extra mile than usual compared to what you get from other larger carriers.

It was parked at the back of Bankstown airport for years... I can recall driving past it on school sports days... it caught on fire once, while just sitting on the ground minding its own business.. Norman's image got signed..

It didn't just catch fire - it was hit by the wreckage of another aircraft that crashed about 50 metres away - flown by someone who decided to top himself in a very public way.
