930 Turbo Carrera

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Seriously with a set of Fuchs and it would be hard to tell. That is neat to have a genuine 75 engine. What happened to the original 75 car?

 

Yeah, I already have a line on some 15" Fuchs. I do have a set of 16's but I really think the 15's would be more appropriate since they're correct for an early car.

Not sure what happened to the car. This engine is in a 1970 911S Targa that I just picked up. Selling the S will fund the rest of this build and then some.

 

I have noticed on several original cars that the script is in two distinctly different shades. On other original cars its uniform. Anyone else notice that?

I can't say for sure, but the wave of collector interest seems to have driven open 356s and early 911s to higher levels. That makes the early Turbos next in line.

I doubt driveability is determining value, in this case.

 

I would agree with you here on most points other than your groupings.

- I tend to look at the early 930's as being 75-79, although as Joe stated, this thread is dedicated to the dicussion of the earliest 930's..75-77
- Very few 75's produced and even fewer here in the US as official importation here started with the 76 model year. (ok, I'm sure that has already been discussed somewhere in this thread right?) And they were $26k off the showroom floor!


- And the middle cars as 80-85, as although not imported to the US, they were still being produced and many made it here throught "grey-market" importation.

- I then view the later cars as 86-89 with the 89 being the standout.
- There are number of small and intricate changes to these cars regarding interior and chassis.
- Of course 89 gets the 5spd

I too have driven most all of them and sold my 77 just a couple years ago and decided to keep my 78 for as you stated, " 3.3 to drive, as they are much much better cars all-around. Off-boost performance, brakes, comfort, road-holding, interior appointments." The 3.0 is quite the beast when the "light switch" is on and a bit doggy when off.

On another note, I think its pretty evident that part of the increase in value of the 3.0 930 is supply and demand.. there are clearly fewer and we all know that this drives price as collectability grows.

Joe, I noticed the same thing regarding the script. My photo of the black/red 930 (in post 171) shows the script in 2 different colors. However, my photo of the rust color car (I think post 206 on page 11) shows the script for "Turbo" & "Carrera" are the same color black.

 

All 930s are great cars. The 75-77 are among the lightest and rarest so that may have something to do with many collectors being very interested in the early cars.

I like the 3.3 cars a lot, my Dad had one from 1987-1990 and it was a blast to drive. This thread isn't suggesting anything negative about the 3.3 cars, its just this is dedicated to the earliest 3.0 cars.

If you are concerned about the money a 79 would bring, keep the car original and don't mod it. Get a set of Fuchs, and put the original front spoiler, bumper and headlamp washers back on your car. At the moment there seem to be tons of modded 930s, but really good all original 930s get tougher to locate and tend to fetch more money with collectors. Many collectors want to experience a car thats as close to how it left the factory as possible.

Very nice 79, it looks great and I'm sure you enjoy every minute behind the wheel! Its a beauty.

 

What he said! With your cars color and low mileage....absolutely support bringing it back to original right down to the radio. Your car will be very valuable, especially if she is as clean as she looks and is wearing original paint too.

 

The "alive" feeling your describing is probably because of less overall weight, and moreso because of less unsprung weight at each corner due to the smaller/lighter brakes.

Great duo! Love the colors too. You can almost nail down the era of 911 from the colors. While the metallic hues of the '80s were mostly drab grays, blues and blacks, the mid-70s had some groovy tones like your car and the tobacco one. I don't know about the 3.0 cars, but tobacco was only offered in '79 and '80 on the 3.3.

Interesting observation on groupings. The gray-market cars seemed to be the "black sheep" here in the states up until maybe 10 years ago, but with the proper paperwork, there doesn't seem to be any discernible difference in value any longer for solid cars. I think all the hack-job converted cars have been weeded out by now.

Anyway, how about a gulf blue on blue from Maryland, single mirror and gray decals.

Yesterday I attended cars and coffee in Charlotte, nc. I with my turbo and 5 other 930 drove in a caravan from lake Norman. It was an awesome sight to see a line up of wide body's running down the road. A 75, 76. 77. 79, 86 and 87 made up the convoy.

It was fun to see the responses from onlookers on the road and at the event.

I've noticed that for a while too and my theory is that at some point the badges were removed (badges stolen, car repainted?) and they had to use a newer Carrera script (from an '84 and up 911). Why they don't go through the trouble of color matching them I'll never know. That's just my theory though.

here is a 77 for sale that the owner put alot of $$ into. while a nice car, i now hate to see the 3.0s moded to a state of no return, as it reduces an already limited supply of stock 3.0s available.

alot of original 3.0s i have seen have this, and the badges are from the factory/never have been removed. being a polymer guy, i beleive this "patina" is a matter of the level / differences in UV stabllity additive used when the difference badges were made back in the day. the lower milaage cars i have seen typcially retain a better match as they tend to spend lesss time in the sun.

 

Yes I know Tim well. 5 of the 6 turbos were his. As you might imagine, it was easy for us to recruit drivers. Tim and I did a blast at one point where my andial car was well into the 160 range...it took just a few seconds and we were back to caravan speeds.

It was a very great way to spend a morning.

I think it has to do with UV exposure on older badging.

I don't think it had to do with removing badging and using later badging. Its generally the word Carrera that is lighter in color on the ones I've seen (see my post #171). So if someone were replacing the Carrera badge I would think it would be darker in color from being newly replaced.

 

No problem. I don't know why my photos show up as links, maybe because I'm not subscribed. I have a few saved on my hd, this thread has inspired me to start uploading them.

The Carrera 3.2 badge is totally different. It's larger with less stubby letters, does not have the vertical hash-mark that leads into the loop at the top of the C and the E is also completely hollow.

The turboCarrera badge is very similar to the Carrera3.o (another great car, that is "quietly" one of the best 911s ever built IMHO) badge in size, shape and style.

1977 single-mirror car in USA Midwest collection without stone guards. Didn't they all come with stone guards for 1976 & 1977? Would this indicate a repaint?
