While reading thousands of 355 F1 post and trying to understand, diagnose and resolve the clunk when shifting into second gear; I remember something about a test or bleeding procedure by selecting the gears with key on, pump running and the engine off.
I can easily under the above parameters shift into R, N, 1 but I can't get it into 2nd. Hear a good solid click with R, N, 1 but not when shifting to second. When selecting 2nd the shift noise is almost nonexistent with the pump starting for 3-4 seconds and then automatically selecting N.

FYI; Pump prime time when cold is 17 seconds.

Selects 2nd with no problems with engine running.

    Anyone?

How is it with other 355s?

I have an F1 although I've never tried to select 2nd gear with the car off.
If the car is shifting fine with the engine running then is there even really a problem?

Do you mean when you turn your car on, it takes 17 seconds for the transmission light to stop flashing? I just put in a new pump because mine was taking 6-7 seconds. If it's taking more than a couple of seconds it's probably on death's door..

The transmission light does flash for 5-6 seconds as per manual. 17 seconds is for the pump to reach pressure and shut off.

Car doesn't shift properly above 2500-3000 rpm when driving. Below these values car shifts into 2nd and with my foot on the brake sitting still.

Trying to narrow down if it's an alignment problem, air in the number two line or ......

Vague memory....but read the Owners Manual and workshop manual. There are certain gears the car can, and can not, select when the engine is not running. I just don't remember what they all where.

IIRC, the transmission light SHOULD flash while the system is pressurizing, no...?

Mine was in the 15-second range before I installed a new 360 pump; now it is in the 5-7-second range when cold.

(been almost a month since I've driven my 355):(

I can select 2nd gear while the engine is off, I think.

Update; after reading in the manual which states with the key in the number two position with engine off, all gears may be engaged. I went to have another look and it appears the pump is not running when selecting 2, but does run with 1. Only after a 2nd gear attempt failure light does the pump run and switches into N.
So following this thought; I quickly engaged 2 while the pump was running after engaging 1. It engaged and so did all the other gears. Up and down with no problems for 10-15 seconds then I let the pump cool. Went back and tried to engage 2 and the same exact problem. It won't engage 2. So I engaged 1 again and while the pump was running I quickly engaged 2 ....3,4,5,6 and again no problem!
OK, my brain is smoking ..... what tells the pump to operate when selecting gears? I thought it was a simple pressure sensor. Is there a select sensor with the pump pressure sensor which operates in unison?
    Back to reading .......

    Hi Mike
Does your flight surgeon know you get these headaches after reading or anytime you try counting over 3?

Gotcha. Misunderstood your post.. I just picked my car up after having a new pump installed and it turns out mine was similar to yours. The light only flashes for 5-6 seconds, but the pump was taking about 20 seconds to prime. With the 360 pump installed it happens instantly. It's amazing how small and inadequate the 355 pump is. Makes you wonder wtf the engineers were thinking.

Could be your F1 sensor. It's located in the bottom of the oil "pan". Maybe it got damaged from a prior grounding. Def sounds like your pump is dying. Mine is taking 13 secs or so to prime when cold. I'm already scheduled for a 360 pump swap.
