What's wrong with yours? Mine was behaving badly two years ago and now it's fine. It would blank out on me and read "000" on the front panel. I took it out and cleaned all the connections on the back panel and on the cable connectors. I also dabbed everything with dielectric grease. Since that day, it's been working perfectly.
It's finally given up! I had it cleaned up and the solder joints all re-soldered to eliminate the standard dry joint problem, which has been fine for months, but I think it's now failed at component level. Half the buttons no longer function, eg Heat and AC, rear heated screen etc, and still get the intermittent fans coming on at random. If I press a combination of buttons, I can sometimes get the AC on, but then it will turn back off. Problem is, it looks like there were various poor attempts at repairing before, so I think it's time to start the search for the impossible!!

Me. I am no fool. That was priced at least $1k too low. PAUL: send me a PM. I'll sell it at the ebay price and ship to UK if you need it really badly. I just think it is actually WORTH at least 2k. I have sold them at $2750 in the past.
Thanks Daniel, thats kind of you. I had no idea what these units change hands for until now. I guess the fact they are obsolete dictates the price a little. I am going to attack mine tonight with the soldering iron in one last revival attempt on the basis I have nothing to lose, so if I could let you know tomorrow, that would be appreciated. Take yours apart and spend the most amount of time/care with the connection pins that join the two circuit boards. That's where they fail. We went through 4 different units with four different options for remanufacture. There was no economically viable way to proceed with the project. Yes, if we wanted to hack something together that looked 'aftermarket' we could do it, but our goal was an OEM looking/functioning piece like these Borletti ones. So, once that project died, I came to the sad (348 owner myself) realization these are going the way of the Dodo, and legitimately command a premium price. 328 front fog lamps are the same way.
One other tip.... The early cars use a smaller connection harness on their back housing, and the vehicle harness doesn't "grab" tightly. A bump in the road can cause it to short. Make sure your vehicle harness properly snaps into the HVAC controller and you've got some slack in the cable.
Thanks for the pointers. In terms of the connection pins between the two boards, do you mean fail as in corrode/need a clean up, or does the joint become loose (pin into socket)? Would it be worth 'hard' wiring the two boards?
Honestly can't believe this - We're at the stage with my car and I'm not 100% sure if my AC unit works - I've been told to wait until we try it before I spend more money, but now I'm regretting it. There was someone on EBay just recently that claimed they could repair those units. I can't seem to find it now, but I did make a copy of the information and have it at home. Let me know if you want more info. I have no idea if they are legit. As I recall it was less than $1000 for the service. As these cars age and this particular item becomes unavailable, sure would be nice if someone way smarter than me could figure out a way to convert the system to a generic A/C on/off button, manual fan speed twist-dial and manual heat amount twist-dial. Might get you thrown out of the concours, but at least you could heat/cool the car. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard 'till you check out the zillions ( well, at least 25 or so) of little connector pins that hook the unit up to the car's wiring harness.

Paul did you check the hidden fuse? I had some problems with mine at one point. First time the hidden fuse was melted then the alternator/battery was not keeping a charge so I had it rebuilt and new battery installed everything is fine since then. Cheers
Dr. Ferrari knew a guy who was working on an aftermarket fix. I have no idea what stage he was at or if the project evaporated but you should call him. Pocono sports car ... Jim McGee, google him for the number as I'm away from my desk.
Just a quick update...Thanks for all your help/suggestions. I had previously performed the fuse mod/upgrade and checked earth points etc, so knew it was going to be pretty bad this time around. I managed to find a replacement panel, complete and working for £150, which I guess is somewhere around $230. Fitted it tonight and everything is working. i have one used for sale along with other 348 electronic bits make a fair offer and i will courier it to you. also have a manual explaining all the error codes. possible you may also need to swap the motor for the vent flaps (usually a broken plastic spindle) which I replaced with a metal one from Hills engineering
