This one is for the F1 fans. Many have talked about the looks of this year's F1 cars, and except for McLaren, that sooner or later will have to come to stepped down design, almost every single car this year has a very ugly front.

To prove it so, I have gone and collect the presentation videos of some of the teams on their Youtube Channels, so that you can see for yourself what they have done to the beuatiful design which has always been a factor of admiration in Formula One.

Many have talked that this could be a bad marketing policy for F1, inclding Adrian Newey. Well in my opinion this will definitely be an ugly season to remember, but still people will go for the show. However if the show doesn't appear, ugliness may never be forgotten and be written forever in the pages of the history of F1.

Enjoy the ugly show! - http://www.autoviva.com/ugly_or_whata/post/3215

I've said this elsewhere--these "step-nose" designs will be remembered as one of F1's unfortunate design eras. Absolutely hideous.

Dont you think it weird that almost all teams came up with the same design solution to the new rules ?

    Not at all!.....

I think if we're perfectly honest there's very, very few folk who could differentiate 'em if they were all painted white - And it's been that way for many years now......

The designers are forced to work within very strict guidelines and their options are therefore severely limited. Mclaren are the only team to have stuck with the "low nose" approach, and they've been that way "forever". All the others took the "high nose" route and obviously wanted to stick with it in '12 - Hence here we are with platypus noses.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    +1

When the rules become that restrictive, there's less and less chance to be different.

If all the teams had gone down the low nose principle, we'd be discussing how everyone's nose look like McLaren's.

The rules-dictated design parameters go into one end of the computer and the ugly car comes out the other.

Besides the Mclaren, i think Sauber nose looks sleek. The worst is definitely Ferrari's. It looks like it can kill someone out there.

*MOST* F1 cars that don't win races have been ugly anyway, its winning races and being fast that makes them look good.

I don't find the hideous, and depending on which cars do well, some of them may actually be good looking. :)

If I may, I do not care how they look as racing is about winning and not a beauty pageant. For some it is important and I respect that so I'm speaking strictly for myself.

Until we get to Australia, I'm not sure whether to be worried about Mclaren or not. They either know something or their design will work hugely against them, with the (presumably) lower airflow going underneath the car from the front...

With a bit of luck it'll work against them and it'll be up to Mercedes to play tag with Red Bull :)

Everybody said the same thing in 2009 when the new designs first came in with their wide front wings and skinny rear wing, now we've gotten used to that, so this is just something else to get used too.

The Renault nose looks the best, doesn't seem to go down as steep as the others, apart from the McLaren of course.

Personally, I think the new crop of cars is so ugly that F1 as a whole should be embarrassed that the rules have dictated such a ridiculous design. It's almost as if the rules writers are intentionally trying to see who can create the worst rule with the ugliest effect.

I know beauty does not win races, but damn.

Ross Brawn said that the reason this came to be is that after the FIA mandated the 2012 nose be lower certain team/teams requested to use the same chassis as 2011 that has the high nose, therefore the awkward transition in the nose height.

I am truly dissappionted in you guys. Obviously you don't give a crap about the essanse of F1.

WHO cares if they are ugly; if they are FASTER.

THAT is what the Constructor's title is all about. THAT is what gets a driver into the Winner's Circle. If engineering didn't matter, Shummi, would still be winning (according to the numbnuts here).

    ENGINEERING folks.

    THAT IS F1.

Or go NASCAR and be happy.

For those of us that have a memory prior to 2009, the current cars (2009+) are still very ugly regardless of the 2012 nose. It just makes me laugh more the way F1 has headed given designs. The 2004 cars are still among my favorite for looks in the modern era. You didn't get used to the new look...you simply lowered your standards.

The wings on the '09+ cars look ridiculously stupid.

I agree from 2002-04 it is my personal opinion that the cars look at there best in recent history. But then in 2005-08 all the teams started to develop more wings for downforce, sometimes even the wings had wings on which for me was too much then in 2009 onwards the side profile of the cars became a lot more simple with lines that actually flow throughout the length of the car.

Then theres the theory in which why they changed the design, to minimise the amount of turbulent air comming off the back of the car, so that the changing car can stay close and overtake. Whether thats worked or not is hard to decided but either way we are stuck with it.

This is what my problem is with the new rules (as well as some other rules in years past). I look at the new batch of cars and say, "how does that make it go around the track faster?" With the stepped nose, the answer is that it doesn't. It's merely there to accommodate some ridiculous rule AND it looks asinine. I'm not saying the new noses will affect my viewing enjoyment or love of the sport, but the cars are beginning to look like a joke.
