All I seem to get these days.

I find they will pay top dollar for perfect, but don't want to pay $100 for one with issues...

Tweaked motor and suspension. I do not know the details but apparently something was done at the factory.

Now you can see why I asked the questions I did Joe..I agree if it is NOT all there..then it is just a "nice driver car" that is of rare quanity. Being that it will be price reflective.

A PERFECT example, as stated in this thread by both Joe and myslef..the side markers..they have to go...it is the first cosmetic heart of the car..the lines. BUT you just cant weld up the holes and spot paint it. Well you can...but it is price reflective:

    1) My LP 400, it was done correct, did a FULL respray, with all glasss and rubbers out..it will get the money.

    2) My recently 1981 S2, spot painted with period correct laquar, but in it's state is a driver and price reflective.

Also the little things, full restoration documents, the Brass rivets, sure they get painted over, but photo documentation that it was done right is needed. Just like you dont see all the new hoses and fittings hidden in the body cavity from front to rear, but need them documented with photos.

The interior material, as it is nice, it is NOT the real stuff..and as well has some of the stitching is in-correct. Along with tools and books, the one's BORN with the car, not found and a kit put together..and my favorite, the orginal key that cranked it's life up from the start when it left the factory...to me like a TRUE birth certificate, just hold it in your hand, close your eyes and think of all the story's and events it has seen.

This is still not a PO PO car, it is still a 400. BUT it is a great canvas to start and to turn into a gem and for that it is price reflective. I still think Joe is a bit low..but that is me and it is now 2012, two years later with a lot more intrest in these cars then in revious years. I was lucky to get my many years ago and even more lucky to watch it's value keep pace with my investment. But again, for me a bit of a mute point as I intend to drive it, which I am sure will cause some of it's value to decrease...but for me, the pleasure of driving it is well worth the depreciated value.

One thing my car does NOT have correct, it's seat belts. I have the correct ones, can be put in at any time with ease, but they are a pain in the ass to operate and not as effective as later years one's that I have installed. When and if it get's ready to go bye bye..the new owner can take them with him and place them in if he/she so see's to do so.

If I want to remove my rear side markers, what should it cost?
Would it be melt the metal in, body work, spot paint?

To share with you, the S2 was just done by Steve, was spot paint in..which IMO would be good to go with your already great paint..cost was just under $7k

I saw this car in Monterey a few years back where it was at the RM Auction. I remember doing a critique of this car and noting the several things wrong with it on this forum, but I don't remember where. I will have to jog my memory, but it was being sold by a shop that did the 'restoration'. There were many things wrong with it. I remember the paint was 'wrong' and poorly done.....eg: where is the black triangle above the rear quarter windows?, side markers?, etc. The interior was wrong. The mechanics were questionable. The spare was a space saver from a later car. There were many issues, but I can't remembe them all.

With your metallic paint, you may have to repaint entirely to do it right. But...

I 2nd. Was quoted 6K to restore euro makers about 4 years ago. But still 1/2 of the car has to be repainted to blend well. Was told better do it with a full paint job.

Ive invited an Italian car paint specialist to come on here and weigh in on this topic.

Then perhaps we can see a bit clearer what this does to values..

Here, I have just cut and pasted those posts:

Look at the missing black triangle of paint above the rear quarter window......the factory painted that black triangle in there and on his car it is all blue. The interior isn't original no matter how much he insisted on it. The spare was a space-saver from a later CT. The engine had not been opened up. Although it was cleaned and detailed well, nobody knows the condition of the rings, bearings, etc. No documentation of the miles, and it is real easy to change the miles on a CT, so documentation is necessary to confirm the odo reading. He had nothing. And more of that kind of stuff makes you wonder, and that wondering is what hurts the values in this market made up of skeptical and picky buyers. The seller was hanging around the car and his nonstop bs that real buyers knew was bs probably turned them off even more.

PS. more to add.......... I hate it when sellers claim their car was freshly restored. To me a full restoration is a complete disassembly and reassemble using all new or reconditioned parts. But more and more you hear about these so-called 'sympathetic' restorations, which really just means a paint job and interior. This was not a fresh restoration as I would define it. The engine must be rebuilt, trans rebuilt, diff rebuilt, all suspension parts removed, repainted or plated, and reassembled. New wheel bearings, new hiem joints, new or rebuilt shocks, new brake lines and on and on. Like Bobileff and like what the guys is doing to the Cannonball car little by little. IMO this one was little more than the paint job and interior for a quick-sale-restoration. This one reminds me of the similar-colored LP400 that sold at Russo Steele in 2008 for about the same money. Only partially restored, and not correctly at that, with no records. Not correctly nor completely redone.

I hate that. A sympathetic restoration is what Roy had done to his S2, you leave the paint and the interior alone and do the mechanicals. What ain't broke ain't fixed.

It does point out, once again, how important a full, thorough PPI with a specialist is, and why that PPI should be coupled with any history that can be dug up.

Now you see why my purchase at $350k makes sense?

You guys at $550k & $600k, so generous. You just lost your shirts :)

I agree, and it should be priced correctly for that type of work..let the enxt buyer/owner decide how far they want to go with it.

Yes, but I was spending YOUR money...or did I read it wrong..LOL LOL

I, as I said, 550K was a GOOD car..in my later posts, with all secondary info you posted..I would drop my value, but I still think 325is low for todays emerging market.

Indeed, to deal with the side markers. That is still "sympathetic" in my view. Your mileage may vary.

No, I said I spent 7K on the Euro side markers removed, welded new plates in, body finish and "spot area" painted with period correct paint to the small minor area's effected by the marker removals..I did not have the estimate broken down, but would venture to guess the paint work was the least expensive portion of the entire job..

BUT, it is now ready for the next owner, if he/she wishes, can do a full repaint, LESS the exspensive cost of the marker correction. I think a HIGH deserving paint of an entire CT, glass out etc etc..should run in the 25-30K mark.

Agree, no where near a "restoartion"......... in all fairness, I dont think I would call it even "sympathetic"..IMO, it was just a step ONE of a MUST for me to correct the car and it's lines to what makes it a countach in the first place..almost like required to have NEW tires, tune up etc..JUST has to be done, no matter how much further you take the car..

So, who wants to take it to the next step..??

ALSO, I am SO suprised that there has been NO ONE sheard of information posted abou the S2..I know it was in hiding snce about 1990..but SOME ONE must have some info on it..anything..GOOD, BAD or UGLY..I am intrested and have no issue with it being shared here on the boards..

At the evry least, I thought JOE would have had something in his factory records to start the ball rolling..??
