Is it true that its a bad idea to use refilled toner cartridges on a laser printer? They are a lot cheaper, but maybe theres a reason...

    Any thoughts?

They are a lot cheaper because the ink in ink jet cartridges can be over $1000 dollars a litre, and laser toners are not exactly value either.

You have to see if your printer has software to reject such cartridges. Re-manufactured is better for laser printers.

I have been using refilled in a shop, and purchased re-manufactured depending on printer, without problems.

They are not crap and they do not tear up your printer unless you buy really cheap crap. Otherwise, it is exactly the same toner, coming from exactly the same factory, as that sold by the big name-brand manufacturers. It's just cheaper. Just make sure you buy the right kind for your printer from someone with a decent reputation.

Imagine if you sold tires. Wouldn't you want people to have cars? You might even offer to help them pay for the cars, if it meant locking them into buying tires from you for a very long time, allowing you to recover your outlay for their car purchase and then go on to make very fat profits on the tire sales.

Same model. Sell the printer cheap. Then sell ink for huge markups. You are being ripped off by HP and the rest.

Smart people buy refilled and save money. It's also an ecologically sound thing to do, as you are keeping plastic junk out of landfills. It is also an economically sound thing to do, for yourself because you are saving money, and for the community because you are helping support competition, which drives down prices for all consumers. Don't be a victim of the name-brand, new-only myth.

Better to compare them to the tobacco industry.

Strategies such as reading an install date from a chip on the cartridge and then after a certain period displaying a false notification that your ink is used, and not allowing the printer to accept ink from the cartridge, regardless of whether you used it or not are not exactly honest.

Class Action Lawsuit including Blennis v. HP, settled by HP, while denying claim.

HP, Lexmark, Epsom and others have all settled class action lawsuits with regard to Ink Cartridges / Toners.

I bought a set of refilled color laser toner carts off of Amazon for $119 vs the $290 staples wanted for HPs. They seem to work fine although the chip in the yellow went bad and the refiller sent me a new chip. Toner carts from HP are the most giant rip off ever. People who buy HP carts at those prices need their heads examined.

    Ciolino v. HP
This lawsuit claims that certain HP inkjet printers used “low on ink” messaging technology to indicate that replacement of a cartridge is needed when the cartridge is not empty and is capable of additional printing, and that this technology confused customers into prematurely replacing their inkjet cartridges. HP denies all these claims.

    Rich v. HP
In this lawsuit, plaintiffs claim that certain HP color inkjet printers used color ink in addition to black ink when printing black text and images without disclosing this to consumers and without providing consumers with the option of disabling this feature, that HP misrepresented and/or failed to disclose the actual page yield for the products at issue (including the true basis for the page yield and cost per page information provided to consumers), and that HP failed to disclose its use of color ink when printing black in connection with stating its page yields. HP denies all these claims.

    Blennis v. HP
This lawsuit claims that HP designed certain of its inkjet printers and cartridges to shut down on an undisclosed expiration date, and that at this point consumers are prevented from using the ink that remains in the expired cartridge and from using all of the printer’s functions until the expired cartridge is replaced. HP denies all these claims.
