i have a '85 308 QV. i bought it with the tubi installed, and i also have the factory exhaust. i like the tubi, but it really resonates badly between 3000 and 4000 rpm. which seems to be the rpm i always end up in highways due to the speed limit and slower cars allover. since it is already boring in the highway, i also don't love having to deal with the excessive sound. i am considering going back to the original exhaust. any cons of doing so? what kind of adjustments would i have to do? i assume power will stay similar (and it is not a powerful car). will sound improve? ps i know the tubi sounds wonderful at higher rpm. how much worse is the sound of factory? how much better it is inside? thanks, alberto
I put a standard system back on my 328 last year (in advance of a long trip) after 10 years with an SS system. Its not as quiet as I thought it would be but it is noticebaly quieter at low revs (below about 3800) which makes it much better for long distance driving. Don't really miss the SS system that much to be honest. The SS system does sound a lot better at idle though
The factory sound is pretty good in-car with a nice burble. I don't have any bad things to say about it. It shakes the walls of the house when I start it in the garage.
You could sell the Tubi and get a Stebro and have money left over... the Stebro has removable/tunable exhaust tip inserts. I take them all out for track days. I use four short ones most of the time, and use two short and two long for extended trips. For example, I might put on the 2-short/2-long ones for the 200 mile drive to an event, and then after they've cooled down it only takes me 5 minutes to remove them.
what is the advantage of the stebro vs factory? i do have the factory one already. it came with the car. do i need to do any tuning or can i just switch exhaust?
Are you sure you have a "Tubi" and not just some aftermarket exhaust?? Tubis usually do not have the same resonance issues that cheaper exhausts have. I've had them on my 308 and 328 and they sounded amazing. I have one on my Maserati Spyder now and it sounds fantastic at all revs. In my personal experience the Stebro exhausts have the most unpleasant 3K resonance-
i have the tubi. i actually have the original installation invoice from the ferrari dealer at the time. don't get me wrong. they do sound great. they are just too loud in the rumble resonance between 3k and 4k...
I also had the Tubi on my 328 (came with the car) and it resonated so badly, I ended up switching back to stock, then switched to QUICKSILVER which resonated as well, then ended up with a STEBRO which did not resonate, which makes driving the car a pleasure on long drives
I want a TUBI but cannot locate....I had a line on one...FleaBay....but was traveling and missed the deadline.....
Maybe the install has a lot to do with it?? because on my 328 the Tubi was heaven- I have a Quicksilver stage III on my 355 and it's loud as hell but really, really pleasant on the highway. I've had a few friends have resonating problems with Stebro- and the Stebro on my 400i was simply torture- I had an OEM style exhaust made by Timevalve in Florida and it transformed the car. I think if a Tubi is resonating badly I'd revisit the installation and ensure that no part of the exhaust is in contact with the frame of the car.
Hi Jay, we did go over the installation numerous times.. when we put the stock unit back on the resonation stopped, then when we installed the QUICKSILVER, it resonated too. Then we found the STEBRO, that hit the mark for us... cheers
Do a search here on Stebro before ordering. Dozens of people have fitment and shipping issues with them. Here is one thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28593&highlight=stebro
I tried an expensive ss exhaust and was shocked by how unpleasant the resonance was. I have found a fabspeed race cat with the stock exhaust to be perfect. A bit more burble, fantastic on overrun, and no resonance problems. A good bit more responsiveness as well. The fabspeed cat is very well made, with good heavy flanges, best quality ofthe aftermarket cats.
for some reason the usa spec 308 qv(84-85) and the 328's with the single cat exhaust system have the same resonance problem with these aftermarket mufflers. the euro cars have the two pipes and no cats like the older cars and they sound great with the stock muffler. I was so impressed when I first drove a euro spec mondial cab with no mods and factory no cats. Ferrari has to conform to our crash and emission laws and the cars are not the same by long shot. if you want your 328 to sound great not loud, install a euro set of headers and a stock euro muffler Its expensive but you won't be disappointed
If ever I had to eventually replace it because it's shot, I would. I've had an Ansa on my old Fiat Spider, and I loved it. For now, the old stock one still looks pretty solid with not rust or rot.
I have a Stebro on my 3.2 V8 (although it's a Mondial) and it sounds fantastic. Fit perfectly, etc. I am also absolutely certain the car is significantly faster (maybe the stock one was clogging up?).
