Hi, i'm french, so sorry for my poor english...Since a few days, my car, a 3.2 mondial coupe, does a ticking noise when the engine is in operate temperature and over 4000 RPM. The car runs fine, no ticking at start up...just when is hot in high RPM...Help. Any idea?

This ticking noise seems to be in the engine bay, passenger side....

The first thing that comes to mind is an exhaust leak but only above 4000rpm seems a bit inconsistant with that idea. Does it match engine RPM or vehicle speed?

I get clicking noise at cold start ups. I think its normal and believe its coming from the Mixture Control Unit, but not sure. Its louder at cold start ups, then the clicking goes away when engine gets warm.
Does anyone else notice the same and what exactly is that clicking for?

Both loose intake manifolds and loose exhaust manifolds can cause a ticking noise. Relatively easy to check. Just retorque.

If the noise slows or quickens with vehicle speed that is usually drivetrain. Wheels, brakes, axles, etc. Does it occur in every gear above 4000rpm or just in lower or higher gears? Can you get it to occur with car not moving, in neutral?

If it is a rattle, these cars have a few places where those occur commonly. Sometimes the screen on the engine lid will vibrate. Also if your exhaust manifolds have heat shields those will sometimes rattle, euro cars don't always have the shields. My car has had the rear lats rattle.

For rattles, to diagnose those I will hit something solid in the engine bay from above or below, usually a frame member with the side of my fist or a rubber coated hammer, this will usually cause the rattle to occur, then I just follow the sound until I find it. If it is not a rattle, please provide more information.

Hi, thanks you for your replies. I try again to day and i note no noise in neutral...it seems to be present since 4000 RPM and in lower, regardless the gear....

I posted your question in the 3X8 forum as the engines are the same. Two responses, the first I had not thought of. 1st, cracked arcing spark plug extenders. The 2nd was valve adjustment. You can start by checking your spark plug extenders, that is free and comparatively easy.

Bonsoir Constance...pour moi du moteur...je vais continuer à investiguer...je vais attaquer mes travaux de distribution, et peut-être que j'y verrai plus clair au démontage...Je pense également vérifier mon jeu aux soupapes...

Incase the English speaking folks were wondering, here is my best translated French:

Good evening Constance… for me on the motor… I would continue to investigate… I would check the distributor, and perhaps take it apart … I would also check the valve clearance…

Hi ... I took this long we to do my cambelt service and research the noise... I don't find the origin of the tinkling metal beyond 4500-5000 rpm over ... this good oil pressure and cold hot at idle and acceleration ... I have two tracks yet ... muffler rear grille, a latte is partially unsoldered and aircon compressor ... maybe ... I read many thread on others forums (not ferrari) .. . and I saw horrible things like: piston pin, connecting rod bearings or villebroquin ....
    i'm afraid...

I think I have a similar problem; a tinny, vibrating sound at higher RPMs coming from the engine compartment (passenger side). I was told by a very experienced Ferrari Tech that the engine mounts were going bad. So far I haven't had the chance to look at it.

If your rear muffler grill is like mine you can remove it and then drive the car briefly to see if that stops the sound. My muffler grill was making noise, a rattling sound. I fixed it by adding a small washer between the car and grill at one bolt. On the aircon compressor, mine made noise as well. To save time I cut the belt off and that noise went away immediately.
